The Yankees will face off against the Toronto Blue Jays in the final game of a four-game series. The Yankees handily won the first two games of this series, but the Blue Jays won game three 3-0 in ten innings.
The Yankees are in fourth place in the AL East with a 25-20 record. A win would push them within striking distance of third place and could move them into the second Wild Card spot. On the other side, the Blue Jays are in third place in the AL East with a 25-18 record. A win would keep them in the same position.
The Yankees’ lineup has been disappointing this season, but they are starting to turn on the jets. They were shut out yesterday but scored 28 runs in the four games previous to that.
The Yankees are still without Giancarlo Stanton but have developed a solid 1-6 in Anthony Volpe, Gleyber Torres, Aaron Judge, Anthony Rizzo, Oswaldo Cabrera, and DJ LeMahieu. Volpe’s bat is improving, and he has shown some power with his six home runs. Torres has 21 RBIs and draws many walks, Judge continues to crush the ball and leads the team with 11 home runs, Rizzo may be the best all-around hitter and has a team-leading 49 hits, Cabrera has been streaky but has shown promise, and LeMahieu has 18 RBIs.
This is not best lineup in baseball, but they are working their way into the top ten.
Nestor Cortes will take the hill for the Yankees. Cortes made his first All-Star team last year but has struggled to replicate that success this year. He comes into this game with a 5.53 ERA and a 1.42 WHIP. Cortes pitches well against subpar or mediocre teams but struggles against contenders. He gave up six earned runs to the Tampa Bay Rays but only allowed two to the Oakland Athletics in his start before that. The Blue Jays are not as good as the Rays, but they are much better than the Athletics.
Cortes will struggle against them the third time around the lineup.
The Blue Jays’ lineup scores at nearly the same pace of the Yankees’ lineup but has a better average. They will be without Vladimir Guerrero Jr. today but will still have Bo Bichette, Matt Chapman, Whit Merrifield, and George Springer.
Bichette and Chapman lead this group. Bichette may be the best hitter in baseball and is tied for the most hits in the Majors with Ronald Acuna Jr. Chapman is also seeing the ball well and has a .318 average. The Toronto lineup is a little slow outside of the group I mentioned above, but their offense will come up big today.
Jose Berrios is getting the nod for the Blue Jays today. Berrios has had a few tough starts this season but has been dominant in his previous two outings. In his previous outing, he gave up two earned runs to the Atlanta Braves in 5⅔ innings, and in his start before that, he gave up two runs to the Pittsburgh Pirates in 6⅓ innings. Berrios is turning a corner and will put together a good start today.
The Blue Jays have momentum from their win last night and have a better pitcher on the mound, so they will win this game. Bet on Toronto.
The over/under for this game is set at nine runs. This will be a high-scoring game since neither starter is an ace, so I would bet on the over.
The Yankees will score four runs today. Three of those runs will come off Jose Berrios. Berrios is pitching well, but he is not twirling shutouts.
He is facing a Yankees’ lineup that is beginning to hit a groove and will allow three runs in five or six innings. The Blue Jays’ bullpen will also allow a run. The Toronto bullpen has a 3.81 ERA, so it would be logical to assume they will give up a run.
The Blue Jays will score six runs today. Four of those runs will come off Nestor Cortes. I am a fan of Nestor Cortes and his interesting windup on the mound, but he will have some issues today.
Toronto has two of the best hitters in baseball in Matt Chapman and Bo Bichette, and they will give him problems. Those problems will lead to other players hitting well and runs being scored. The Yankees’ bullpen will also give up two runs.
They gave up three runs in the tenth inning yesterday, so it is safe to say they are not at their best right now. This will lead to them allowing a couple of runs.
