The Central divisions in Major League Baseball have not been the strongest divisions in either league so far this baseball season. But someone has to win them and get to the playoffs, and the Minnesota Twins and Milwaukee Brewers appear poised to be those teams this year. On Tuesday night, they will face off in the first game of a two-game series, with the Twins winning the first two games of this season series.
The Minnesota Twins have widened their advantage at the top of the AL Central, holding a six-game lead over the second-place Cleveland Guardians. Minnesota won its last game, defeating the Pittsburgh Pirates to secure a win in that three-game set. Here, the Twins will look to clinch the season series over the Brewers, after sweeping them in a two-game series back in June.
Starting this game on the mound for the Twins is Bailey Ober, who enters this game at 6-6 with an ERA of 3.40. Ober is averaging a strikeout per inning on the season so far, with fairly even home and road splits on the year. Against an inconsistent Milwaukee offense, this game is a great chance for Ober to pick up his fifth win of the year on the road, and to get back above the .500 mark on the season individually.
Unfortunately for the Twins, they may not be able to take advantage of the offensive woes for the Brewers. While Milwaukee ranks 22nd in the majors in runs scored this season, the Twins are only 19th in that department themselves. They have scored just 14 more runs than the Brewers for the entire season, and we should see a competitive game between these teams as a result.
The Milwaukee Brewers’ lead in their division is a little more tenuous than that of the Minnesota Twins. Milwaukee enters Tuesday just 2.5 games ahead of the Chicago Cubs at the top of the NL Central. But this game could help the Brewers to extend their lead in their division, as they turn to veteran starter Wade Miley to shut down the Twins and deliver Milwaukee with a significant victory.
So far this season, Miley is 6-3 and has an ERA of 3.05 in his 82.2 innings of work. Miley is going to pitch to contact in this game, as he has struck out just 55 batters over the course of the year. Against a Twins team that is not one that can score runs on a consistent basis, that approach should not be too dangerous for Miley and the Brewers, though in a one-game sample that could change.
No matter how Miley performs on the mound for Milwaukee, their offense simply needs to be better down the stretch of the regular season. The Brewers rank 22nd in baseball in home runs, which has forced them to string hits together in order to put runs on the board. If they cannot do that against Ober, the Brewers could be in for another disappointing night against the Twins on Tuesday.
