Last week, one of the most highly anticipated divisional batters in the NL West occurred as the Los Angeles Dodgers went on the road to take on the San Diego Padres. The Dodgers went on the road to win the series in the last two games. San Diego won the first game 5-2 on May 5th followed by a 2-1 win on May 6th and a 5-2 win in extra innings on May 7th.
This weekend, the rivalry is renewed as the Padres (19-19) will be the ones going on the road to take on the Dodgers (23-15). The Dodgers and the Padres have a talented full of high-caliber playmakers in the batting and pitching game.
In the last five games for the Padres, including the three games against the Dodgers, they averaged 3.4 runs, 7.0 seven hits, 3.2 RBI, 5.4 walks, and 10.2 strikeouts encountered. The Padres accounted for a batting average of .210 and an on-base percentage of .321.
During this span, the Padres had five players that were about to account for at least two home runs. Third baseman Manny Machado accounted for six runs, 18 hits, four double-base hits, five RBIs, 22 total bases, only six strikeouts, a batting average of .429, and an on-base percentage of .478. Rightfielder Fernando Tatis Jr. accounted for 18 hits, four runs, six hits, two home runs, five RBIs, 13 total bases, only two strikeouts, a batting average of .333, and an on-base percentage of .368.
The Padres have been stellar in their last five games in their pitching game. San Diego has an ERA of 1.72 by allowing only 5.6 hits, 2.8 runs, 4.2 walks, and 0.8 home runs while delivering an average of nine strikeouts per game. Yu Darvish, Michael Wacha, and Joe Musgrove had a stellar pitching performance this past week for the Padres.
In the last six games, the Dodgers averaged 4.3 runs, 6.0 hits, 1.7 home runs, 4.2 RBIs, 4.2 walks, and 8.0 strikeouts. During that time, Los Angeles accounted for a batting average of .181 and an on-base percentage of .283.
The Dodgers had a better batting performance in the series against the Milwaukee Brewers than in the series against the Padres. Los Angeles averaged 3.0 runs, 4.3 hits, 1.0 home runs, 2.7 RBIs, 4.0 walks, and encountered 9.3 strikeouts in the three previous games against San Diego.
First baseman Freddie Freeman has been solid in the last five games for the Dodgers. Freeman has accounted for a team-high five runs, a team-high five hits, one home run, three RBIs, 10 total bases, and six strikeouts. Rightfielder Mookie Betts, second baseman Miguel Vargas, shortstop Chris Taylor and catcher Will Smith have accounted for two home runs each.
Dustin May and Tony Gonsolin have been stellar in their pitching performances in the last six games. The Dodgers’ bullpen has allowed an average of 6.7 hits, 3.3 runs, 3.2 walks, and 1.2 home runs while delivering an average of 9.3 strikeouts. The Dodgers’ ace pitcher Clayton Kershaw allowed eight hits, four runs, five walks, and two home runs while delivering seven strikeouts.
The over/under for Friday’s game against the beginning of the three-game series between the Padres and the Dodgers is set at nine runs. In the previous three games last weekend between the two teams, the Dodgers and the Padres have not been able to eclipse seven runs. Two games have ended at seven runs while the other game was at three runs.
It was expected that the previous series between the Padres and the Dodgers was going to be a high-scoring set of games based on the roster of talented batters. Instead, it was the talented pitching crew of both teams that kept the previous series from serious scoring opportunities.
On Saturday, May 13th, Los Angeles will have the big edge in the pitching as it will start Julio Urias (3.77 ERA in 45.1 innings pitched) while San Diego will start Joe Musgrove (6.75 ERA in 13.1 innings pitched). Urias is more experienced and more efficient this season as he can put the great batters of the Padres into tough situations. On Sunday, May 14th, Los Angeles is projected to start Tony Gonsolin (1.93 ERA in 14 innings pitched) while San Diego is set to have Michael Wacha (4.82 ERA in 37.1 innings pitched).
The Dodgers will have the edge in the pitching games in both of the final two games for the series.
