On Tuesday night, the Baltimore Orioles and Toronto Blue Jays will play in another huge game with AL East implications. Baltimore won the series opener between these teams on Monday, maintaining their lead in the AL East as a whole. On Tuesday night, the Orioles will look for another huge division win, while the Blue Jays will hope that a triumphant return to the mound for one of their starters will kickstart a return to the top of the division.
The Baltimore Orioles have won two straight games and three of their last four, taking the lead in the AL East. Coming into Tuesday’s MLB action, the Orioles are 1.5 games ahead of the Rays at the top of the division, and 6.5 games ahead of the third-place Blue Jays. Here, the Orioles have a great chance to create some further separation between themselves and Toronto with a win on the road.
The first thing the Orioles will be looking to take advantage of in this game is the return of Hyun-Jin Ryu for the Blue Jays. Ryu has not pitched in over a year, as he has had to work his way back from Tommy John surgery. That could mean some rust that Ryu needs to knock off in this start, which the Orioles could take full advantage of thanks to their explosive offense.
Also worth keeping an eye on in this game is the fact that the Orioles are not a team that struggles to perform on the road. Baltimore is 33-20 on the road this season, despite playing in the hyper-competitive AL East and playing in some of the toughest venues in the league while on the road in division games.
The Toronto Blue Jays enter Tuesday with a 59-48 record and 6.5 games back of the Orioles for first place in the AL East. But the Blue Jays are holding onto the third Wild Card spot in the American League coming into this matchup. They will look to strengthen their potential playoff positioning with a win in this game at home, with one of their top starting pitchers back on the mound for this game.
Hyun-Jin Ryu has pitched in just six total games since the start of the 2022 season, with Tommy John surgery derailing what had been a very successful career to that point. The question for Ryu coming into this game is just how much he can give the Blue Jays. Don’t expect him to go deep into this game, but a few productive innings would be considered a huge win for Toronto in a game where simply getting to the bullpen with a chance to win would be a positive result.
Along with the return of Ryu, the Jays could have trouble thanks to the absence of Bo Bichette on Tuesday night. Bichette has been one of the favorites to lead the major leagues in hits all season long. Without him to set the table for the Blue Jays, the power bats in Toronto will have fewer baserunners they can potentially drive in while Bichette is out, which could really hurt them in this game.
