In this contest, we will take the Milwaukee Brewers to win at home over the New York Mets at a plus price. Milwaukee has won three games in a row after dropping their season opener to the Chicago Cubs, and their offense has been firing on all cylinders of late. In their last two games, the Brew Crew have scored a combined 19 runs, including 10 in Monday night’s shutout win over the Mets.
The Mets are favored in this game due to the presence of Max Scherzer on the mound, which is understandable given his status as one of the NL Cy Young favorites. But the Mets ace was far from untouchable in his first start of the year against the Miami Marlins, giving up three runs in six innings of work. Against a more potent Brewers lineup, he could have his share of struggles once again.
Milwaukee is 1-0 at home this season after beating up the Mets on Monday, and they were solid at home last year as well. They went 46-35 at home last year, and continuing their strong play at home early this season will be imperative as they hope to leapfrog the St. Louis Cardinals in the NL Central in 2023.
The New York Mets are off to a 3-2 start this season, after taking three out of four against the Miami Marlins to open the year. They did not follow that series up in a positive way, losing by 10 runs to the Brewers in their series opener last night. But the Mets are favored going into this contest with Max Scherzer on the mound.
Offensively, the Mets need to find some consistency if they want to emerge as serious contenders in the National League. In their three wins on the season, the Mets have scored five or more runs in each contest. But in their two losses, they have scored a combined one run. While it makes sense that a team is scoring more in wins than they are in losses, such dramatic peaks, and valleys are concerning early on.
Also concerning for the Mets is the fact that they are hitting just .201 as a team, which puts them in 26th in Major League Baseball in that category. Only the Nationals, Mariners, Royals, and Tigers have been worse in that department so far. Of course, it is early in the season and small sample sizes are skewing things for now, but the Mets bats may be more influential to their success than Scherzer tonight.
The Milwaukee Brewers are off to a 3-1 start this season, taking two of three against the Chicago Cubs and winning their series opener against the Mets. After being shut out by the Cubs on Opening Day, the Brew Crew has scored 22 runs across their subsequent three contests. Here, their offense will be challenged by Max Scherzer, which will put pressure on starting pitcher Wade Miley.
Miley saw just nine games of action last season and was serviceable in those appearances. He went 2-2 with an ERA of 3.16, which was perfectly adequate despite the sheer volume of time that he missed throughout 2022. Here, he will need to be sharp from the start to avoid losing to one of the best pitchers in the game today in Scherzer.
What has been impressive about the start for the Brewers so far this season is the fact that their offense has been performing despite not bringing the power just yet. Milwaukee has hit just two home runs on the year thus far, putting them in a tie for the third-fewest dingers in the majors. Power hitter Rowdy Tellez has struggled thus far, and the Brewers would love to see him break out of his early season slump today.
