The Giants have had a rocky season thus far, but have still managed to float around .500. San Francisco beat St. Louis in three of four games the first time these teams met this season in late April. However, the Cardinals won 6-0 in the final game of the first series between the two National League foes. The Cardinals will look to turn around their already disappointing season when they host San Francisco on Monday. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:45 p.m. ET and you can watch it nationally on ESPN+.

The Giants come into this matchup having won five of their last nine games in June. They’re coming off of a 13-3 win over the Cubs on Sunday. San Francisco is putting Logan Webb on the mound, who has shown to be shaky as of late. However, he will certainly look to turn it around on Monday night against a struggling St. Louis team.
The Cardinals have been mediocre coming into this game, winning only two games this month. They’re coming off of a 4-3 loss to the Reds, and have a worse record than Cincinnati with just under 100 games left on the calendar. St. Louis will look to respond on Monday, but for them to do this, they must keep the ball in the yard. Matthew Liberatore will take the ball for the Cardinals, and he has yet to show that he can make it as a pitcher in the MLB. Neither club has been looking stellar but it’s a long season and there’s a lot of time for these teams to start playing together. As bad as the Giants have been, they have a clear advantage in this game with Logan Webb on the hill. We’re going to take them on the moneyline in this spot.
Logan Webb will take the mound Monday evening with hope of extending the Giants regular season series lead to 4-1 over the Cardinals. Webb is 4-6 with a 3.09 ERA. He has pitched 84.1 innings, giving up 75 hits, and striking out 85 batters. Webbs has been fairly poor in his past two outings, giving up seven total runs in twelve innings.
Matthew Liberatore will make his fifth start of the season and is coming off two forgettable games. He allowed nine runs in nine innings over these two starts. He enters Monday with a 1-2 record and a 6.00 ERA. In 15 innings during the 2023 campaign, he has only managed 11 strikeouts, so there are definitely some improvements that need to be made for him to give his team a chance to win.
We expect both teams to be able to get a hold of the ball in this game. The Giants have been successful off of lefties, and Webb has shown he has holes in his game over his past couple of starts. This should jumpstart St. Louis’ offense.
As bad as St. Louis has played this season, they still have power hitters throughout the lineup. The team has blasted 90 homers, but inconsistency has held them back throughout the year. We like the Giants to win, but runs should be scored. Therefore, the over of eight runs is also relatively appealing in this spot.
The Giants are four games back from the Dodgers and seven games back of the Diamondbacks in the NL West. Logan Webb has been decent in his past starts against the Cardinals, but we think San Francisco will win because of their offense.
The Giants are in third place in the NL West, and this series is a perfect time to start turning up the momentum. The Cardinals are on a downhill slide with no signs of looking up, and the Giants have been much more consistent recently. The Giants will look for Michael Conforto, Thairo Estrada, and J.D. Davis to get the balls in play and give Matthew Liberatore nightmares early and often.
The Cardinals come into this game dealing with injuries to Lars Nootbar and Tyler O’Neil, who are both currently on the 10-day IL. Injuries don’t help, but this Cardinals team has really struggled in the month of June. Every game they’ve played this month has been decided by three or fewer runs, s o when the games are on the line the Cardinals closers haven’t been performing. The losses can’t totally be stacked against the bullpen, as run support hasn’t been consistent from the offense. St. Louis has loads of talent, but they can’t put the winning formula in place. If they don’t find a way to turn this sub-.500 record around, it will be another disappointing season for the Cardinals. St. Louis hasn’t lived up to the hype as of late, and this is becoming the trend in the city.
The Cardinals currently are last in the NL Central, seven games behind the Pirates and Brewers. There is still time to turn it around, but the clock is ticking. If they can’t get some quality pitching out of their closers, they’ll more than likely finish in the last two spots in the division. To win this game they are going to have to get the bats of Paul Goldschmidt, Nolan Gorman, and Tommy Edman going early. Matthew Liberatore will not be able to win this game with a stellar performance. The momentum must come from the bats, and this is how they’ve won their limited games in 2023.
