MLB free agency is in full swing as the Winter Meetings begin in Texas, and the most significant signing occurred on Sunday night. Juan Soto is staying in New York, but he will play for a new team in 2025.

The New York Mets and Soto agreed to a 15-year $765 million deal. Steve Cohen is going all-in on winning a World Series, and he just signed one of the best players on the planet to help reach his goal.

Even though Juan Soto is gone, many free agents are still looking for a home. The top contenders have free agency needs, and these looming signings will significantly impact the market.

MLB Free Agency 2024 Predictions

Free Agency Impact on World Series Odds

Los Angeles Dodgers (+370) at FanDuel

The Los Angeles Dodgers won the World Series in 2024 thanks to their loaded lineup. Any team with Shohei Ohtani, Freddie Freeman, Mookie Betts, Will Smith, Max Muncy, and many more big names is bound to hit the baseball.

However, Los Angeles was in plenty of tight games because they lacked starting pitching. Walker Buehler was a pitcher who struggled in the regular season, but he rose to the occasion in the postseason. However, he will hit free agency, which made Los Angeles’ biggest offseason need starting pitching.

Ace Tyler Glasnow will return after a season-ending elbow injury, and Ohtani will pitch in 2025. The Dodgers also added Blake Snell early in free agency.

Snell was one of the best starting pitchers available, and he makes this team even more of a legitimate World Series contender. It’s hard for the Dodgers World Series odds to shorten, no matter who they sign.

Los Angeles has some of the shortest preseason odds we have seen in years, and they’re bound to repeat as champions.

New York Mets (+700) at FanDuel

The Mets World Series odds were cut in half after signing Soto. They went from +1400 to +700 to win the World Series after the news broke late on Sunday night.

Soto is one of the best players in baseball and the most incredible free-agent prospect in the last 20 years. The Mets spent a lot of capital on Soto, so they don’t have much room to work with financially.

Cohen will spend whatever it takes to win, but New York didn’t need much to transform into a World Series club. It seemed like they were one player away from a title, and they have filled this void.

One position where New York does need help is their starting pitching. Kodai Senga and Jose Quintana weren’t built to carry a team. Additionally, the Athletics signed Luis Severino in free agency, so the Mets must fill a lot in their rotation.

Yet, they’ll worry about their pitching later on because they made a statement by signing Soto. What makes things even better for the Mets is that they stole him from the team in the Bronx.

Atlanta Braves (+750) at FanDuel

The Braves' offseason will dictate their season in 2024. They have many free agents on their roster, including Max Fried, Charlie Morton, Travis d’Arnaud, Adam Duvall, Gio Urshela, and White Merrifield.

The Braves need to retain a few of these players, with the most significant target being Max Fried. If they can return Fried to the team, their rotation will be good because Spencer Strider is now healthy.

They also get Ronald Acuna Jr. back following his ACL injury. Acuna is expected to be ready for Opening Day, which is right around the corner.

Atlanta has a solid team, but they need to add some power bats to keep up with the Dodgers and the Mets after adding Soto.

New York Yankees (+950) at FanDuel

The Yankees lost the World Series to the Dodgers, and they just lost the best free agent on the market. New York’s World Series odds shifted from +650 to +950 to win the World Series after losing Soto.

Soto’s $765 million is a hefty price for any team, and New York wasn’t willing to go this deep into their pocket. While Soto is a generational talent, 15 years is a lot for any club to commit to in the current start of baseball.

The Yankees' free agency outlook now becomes very interesting. It was evident in the World Series that New York wasn’t as deep as the Dodgers in any facet of the game, and now they lost Soto.

They’re also likely to lose Alex Verdugo. They need outfielders and power bats very severely, but they will be hard to find, considering that New York invested much of its time in the Soto sweepstakes.
