On Tuesday night, the Los Angeles Dodgers will take on the Miami Marlins in South Florida. This game will start the second three-game series of the year between these teams, after the Dodgers won two of the first three games they played against one another back in August. In this series opener, two star pitchers will take the mound, in a game that both teams are hoping to win to help their playoff positioning.
The Los Angeles Dodgers come into this series having lost three of their last four games, faltering at home against the Atlanta Braves in a four-game series. Los Angeles did win the final game of that series to salvage at least something from it. They will look to build on that win here in Miami, as the Dodgers send their ace to the mound in Clayton Kershaw.
This season, Kershaw has been spectacular, exceeding expectations based on his age. The Dodgers left-hander has gone 12-4 for the season, posting an ERA of 2.48 thus far, and remaining in the top-10 in the NL Cy Young race as the calendar turns to the month of September. In this game, he will have his hands full with Luis Arraez at the top of the Marlins lineup, but that is nothing he can’t handle.
Meanwhile, the offense of the Dodgers will aim to wake back up after a rough weekend against the Braves. Los Angeles was held to three or fewer runs in each of the final three games of their series with the Braves, a steep departure from their usual output. Now that they are not facing the team with the best record in baseball, we could see a better offensive showing from the NL West leaders.
The Miami Marlins are in the thick of the NL Wild Card race, as they are within a half-game of the third and final Wild Card spot. The Marlins enter this series with the Dodgers having won four games in a row, as they swept the Washington Nationals in a four-game series in their most recent outings. Here, the Marlins will look to keep that momentum going, albeit against a much tougher opponent in the Dodgers.
For the Marlins, it will be Jesus Luzardo on the mound to start this game, which should mean good things for the NL Wild Card contenders. Luzardo has been the unquestioned ace of this Marlins staff this season, going 9-8 with a 3.62 ERA. With Sandy Alcantara struggling the way he has this year, the contributions of Luzardo have been massive, and will need to continue to be down the stretch.
In this game, and this series against the Dodgers, Miami’s offensive consistency will be of vital importance. In their first series against the Dodgers this year, the Marlins scored 11 runs in the first game, and one run in each of the final two games. They will need to find a way to put runs on the board with regularity if they want to avoid being handed losses that could crush their hopes of making the postseason. That will start with Luis Arraez getting on base early and often against the Dodgers pitching staff.
