When the Arizona Diamondbacks face the Atlanta Braves on Thursday afternoon, it will be a battle of Cy Young award contenders in the National League. With Spencer Strider and Zac Gallen on the mound, the pitcher who fares better in this game could have the inside track to the NL Cy Young. While the Braves are favored in this game, the Diamondbacks have been playing better baseball of late, and this contest could go in either direction.
Going into Thursday afternoon, the Arizona Diamondbacks have won two games in a row against the Atlanta Braves. They rebounded nicely from dropping three in a row to the Toronto Blue Jays on the road in this series, and will aim to complete a three-game sweep of the Braves here. For that to happen, Zac Gallen will need to pitch at the Cy Young level he has for most of this season.
So far this year, Gallen is 11-4 with a 3.14 ERA, and he gave up just two earned runs in six inning against the Braves earlier this season. Matched up with Strider in this contest, Gallen may need to be even better in this contest for the Diamondbacks to come away with a win. But Gallen’s woes on the road so far this season could prevent him from accomplishing that on Thursday.
In 2023, Gallen is 9-0 with a 1.48 ERA at home, but he is just 2-4 with a 5.11 ERA on the road. That glaring discrepancy between home and road performance could be his undoing in this game. Not only could it cost the Diamondbacks a key game as they look to hunt down the Dodgers in the NL West, but it could cost him his shot at winning the Cy Young award in the process.
The Atlanta Braves have emerged as the clear class of the National League East this season, but they have fallen on hard times of late. Atlanta has lost four games in a row, all of which have come at home, as they lost the final two games of their series with the White Sox before losing the first two of this series. Now, the Braves call on their ace in Spencer Strider to try and stop the bleeding on Thursday.
Spencer Strider comes into this game with a record of 11-3 and an ERA of 3.66. In his last start, he struck out 10 members of the White Sox, but gave up five earned runs in six innings. That start resulted in a loss for both Strider and the Braves, snapping a four-start winning streak for Strider. In this game, Strider will look to outperform Gallen to get back into the win column and end his team’s losing streak.
Interestingly enough, Strider has been better on the road than he has been at home this season. The Braves ace has an ERA of 2.94 on the road and 4.30 at home, the opposite problem from the one Gallen has endured in 2023. Whichever pitcher can overcome their split situation in this game should lead their team to victory in what could end up being the game of the day on Thursday in baseball.
