One of the fewest divisional series matchups to be tied 1-1 is the Houston Astros versus the Minnesota Twins. The Astros took game one with a 6-4 score before the Twins tied it up 6-2.
In each matchup, either the Astros or the Twins have been able to score in the first inning. Each winner has been able to score in the first inning to get a clear advantage.
The Astros and the Twins are two highly batting teams, especially in the first inning. Houston is ranked fifth in the league in runs scored in the first inning (0.68). Minnesota is ranked 14th in the league in runs scored in the first inning (0.53).
The Twins are going into this game with the better pitching matchup and it's not even close. The Twins are going with their best starting pitcher Sonny Gray (2.79 ERA in 184 innings pitched), while the Astros are going with Cristian Javier (4.56 ERA in 162 innings pitched).
While the Twins are ranked last in the AL throughout the regular season in strikeouts encountered (1654), they have been getting better at the plate late. With the better pitching matchup and coming off a big game two win, Minnesota could see its solid chance to take an early lead in game three and potentially take the series lead.
The Texas Rangers have dominated this ALDS matchup against the Baltimore Orioles. The Rangers won the first matchup 3-2 as neither team scored until the fourth inning. The Rangers went to win game two of the series 11-8 as they didn't score in the first inning, but the Orioles scored two runs. Texas went on to score five runs in the second inning and four in the third inning.
It is not uncommon for the Rangers to not kick up their efficiency at the plate until after the first inning. The Rangers are ranked 18th in the league in runs accounted for in the first inning (0.51). Jonah Heim and Nathaniel Lowe are not the most effective leadoff hitters for Texas.
Baltimore is not much better at scoring in the first inning this season. The Orioles are ranked 15th in the league in runs accounted for in the first inning (0.52).
The Rangers are going into this game with a better pitching matchup than the Orioles. Texas will be going with Nathan Eovaldi (3.63 ERA in 144 innings pitched), while Baltimore will be going with Dean Kremer (4.12 ERA in 172.2 innings pitched).
The Orioles are the more trusting team to account for early runs in the game, but the Rangers will have the better pitching. While it is more likely for the game to be scoreless after the first inning, the team that finds a way to score early has a chance to win.
