After regressing to near league average in most key batting metrics, the Baltimore Orioles offense is in a position to round back into form in a favorable matchup against the San Francisco Giants Hayden Birdsong. Before that takes place, we turn our attention towards the Arizona Diamondbacks and Colorado Rockies as both clubs are set to roll out a pair of underwhelming pitchers in Wednesday’s contest.

After stumbling in a series against the Detroit Tigers, the Baltimore Orioles have now fallen down to four games back from the New York Yankees in the AL East division standings. With a little more than 10 games left in the season, the Orioles need to round back into form in order to salvage their division title hopes. Winning the AL East is crucial this season as the winner will also receive a bye in the playoffs as both the Orioles and Yankees are ahead of the AL West leading Houston Astros in the overall standings.
Should the Orioles want to increase their chances of making a run to the World Series by securing a bye in the first round of the playoffs, then their offense will need to recapture the same success they had earlier in the season. Entering Wednesday’s contest against the San Francisco Giants, the Orioles offense ranks above league average in Team Total Hits, RBIs, Total Runs Scored, and On Base Percentage.
Fortunately for Baltimore, their offense will be given an opportunity to round back into form and build some late season momentum in a favorable matchup against the Giants Hayden Birdsong. In his 13 starts this season, Birdsong has struggled with keeping opposing runners off the bases and out of scoring position as he takes the mound with an ERA of 4.74 and a WHIP of 1.421. His back end also gives his minimal support as the Giants defense ranks 28th overall in Defensive Efficiency.
As for San Francisco, their regressing offense will also be given an opportunity to play at a more competitive level as they are set to face off against the Orioles Dean Kremer. Kremer has struggled with limiting opposing scoring opportunities this season as he takes the mound with a ERA of 4.10 and a FIP of 4.22. His inability to keep opposing runners out of scoring position bodes well for the Giants offense as they have crashed down to below league average in RBIs and Total Runs Scored.

Hours before the start of our previously mentioned YRFI, we focus on the afternoon matchup between the Arizona Diamondbacks and Colorado Rockies as a pair of underwhelming pictures are set to take the mound. The Diamondbacks are also playing with a higher sense of urgency as the Atlanta Braves and New York Mets continue to close the gap between them in the wildcard standings for one of the three wildcard spots.
Should Arizona want to ward off the surging playoff contenders, then their offense will need to open up the scoring early against the Rockies to help mask their lack of defensive production. Their elite top of the order will be given an opportunity to generate production from the opening pitch as Austin Gomber has struggled with avoiding contact. In 28 games played, Gomber has averaged over one Hit Against per Inning Pitched while also generating a WHIP of 1.278.
On the other side of the field, the Rockies offense will be given a chance to match the Diamondbacks offensive production as they also draw a favorable matchup in Wednesday’s contest as they are set to face off against Eduardo Rodriguez. Like Gomber, Rodriguez has also struggled with avoiding contact as he has conceded 40 Hits Against in 34.1 Innings Pitched while generating a ERA of 5.50 and a WHIP of 1.544.
