Even though Blake Snell is playing far better than he did earlier in the season, he is still prone to getting rocked from the opening pitch as he faces off against one of the best offenses in the league. Later in the night, we turn our attention towards the matchup between the Detroit Tigers and San Diego Padres as the lowly Tigers offense will get an opportunity to play at a competitive level against the Padres Martin Perez.

As we near the end of the regular season, every game brings a higher sense of urgency for the Arizona Diamondbacks as they look to hold on to their narrow lead for one of the three highly coveted wildcard spots. Especially since they are six games back from the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West division standings, meaning their best course of making the playoffs resides on them warding off the Atlanta Braves and New York Mets in the wildcard standings.
Should the Diamondbacks want to pad their lead over the rest of the pack, then their offense will need to continue to play at a high rate as they draw a tough assignment with Blake Snell taking the mound for the San Francisco Giants. Snell has started to show shades of his former Cy Young winning self, entering Thursday’s contest against Arizona with an ERA of 3.56, a WHIP of 1.081, a FIP of 2.76, and less than one Hit Against per Inning Pitched.
Fortunately for the Diamondbacks, their offense is more than capable of bringing Snell back down to reality as they currently rank near the top of the board in Team Total Hits, RBIs, Total Runs Scored, and On Base Percentage. Their top of their order rivals the best of them, kicking things off with former NL Rookie of the Year award winner Corbin Carroll to help get his blistering fast speed on the bases early in the contest
On the other side of the field, the San Francisco Giants offense gets a far friendlier arm to swing against as Merrill Kelly is set to take the mound. Kelly has severely underwhelmed in his efforts of limiting opposing offensive production, entering the contest with an ERA of 4.30 and a FIP of 5.27. Better yet for the Giants offense, the Diamondbacks defense continues to struggle as a whole as they rank 25th in Defensive Efficiency.

The San Diego Padres find themselves in a similar situation as the Arizona Diamondbacks, sitting a handful of games back from the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West division standings while holding on to one of the three wildcard spots. As for the Detroit Tigers, time is quickly running up for them to make the playoffs as they are five games back from the Kansas City Royals in the wildcard standings for the last playoff berth in the AL.
Should the Tigers want to claw away at the Royals lead in the wildcard standings, then their offense must capitalize on their matchup against the Padres Martin Perez. Perez has severely struggled with keeping opposing runners off the bases, taking the mound with a WHIP of 1.535 and FIP of 5.06. That bodes well for Detroit’s offense as they enter the contest ranked well below league average in Team Total Hits, RBIs, Total Runs Scored, and On Base Percentage.
As for the Padres, their offense has continued to terrorize opposing pitchers by ranking near the top of the board in the same previously mentioned offensive metrics. Against the Tigers Casey Mize, the Padres offense will have the opportunity to continue to succeed as Mize has struggled with avoiding opposing contact. In 17 starts, Mize takes the mound with an ERA of 4.25, a WHIP of 1.417, 98 Hits Against, and 40 Earned Runs Allowed.
