With Justin Verlander continuing to struggle since making his return from injury, we start the day fading him against the productive Boston Red Sox offense. We then turn our attention towards the matchup between the Minnesota Twins and San Diego Padres as both offenses look to open up the scoring early to help secure a win and move their team up their respective division standings.

After a horrific start to their season, the Houston Astros have managed to turn their year around and are a sizable favorite to win the AL West division title with a six-game lead over the Seattle Mariners. While their offense has continued to play at an elite rate, their defense has steadily climbed up the board in Defensive Efficiency. With both sides of the field getting hot at the right time, the Astros enter the late stages of the season as a potential World Series contender.
Speaking of the Astros offense, they have continued to play as one of the best units in the league by ranking above league average in Team Total Hits, RBIs, Total Runs Scored, and On Base Percentage. Even without Alex Bregman, the Astros' top of their order remains productive as Yainer Diaz joins the likes of Jose Altuve and Yordan Alvarez who both possess an elite blend of power and contact ability.
Every ounce of their offensive production will be on full display in this matchup as they are set to face off against the Red Sox rotational pitcher Cooper Criswell. Criswell has struggled with keeping opposing runners off the bases and out of scoring position, taking the mound with a WHIP of 1.360. To make matters worse for Criswell, the Red Sox back end gives him minimal support as they rank 24th in Defensive Efficiency.
On the other side of the field, the Astros surging defense will be captained by former Cy Young Award winner Justin Verlander who looks to continue to round back into form since making his return from injury. The issue for Houston is that Verlander has yet to resemble his former self as he currently possesses an ERA of 3.95, a WHIP of 1.211, and FIP of 4.99. With the Red Sox offense matching the Astros' marks across the board, expect Verlander’s struggles to continue to persist him.

Later in the day, we turn our attention towards the matchup between the Minnesota Twins and San Diego Padres as both units look to inch closer to first place in their respective division standings. While both clubs currently have a sizable lead in the wildcard standings for one of the three wildcard spots, both the Minnesota Twins and San Diego Padres are less than four games back from their current division leaders.
While the Padres' chances of winning the division look bleak with the Los Angeles Dodgers getting healthier, the Twins can still close the gap on the Cleveland Guardians as they battle through one of the hardest remaining schedules. Luckily for Minnesota, they are in a position to secure a win off the backs of their offense as they are set to face off against the Padres' Matt Waldron. Waldron has struggled with limiting opposing scoring production, taking the mound with an ERA of 4.29 and FIP of 4.04.
As for the Padres, their offense has continued to play as one of the best units in the league by ranking near the top of the board in all key offensive metrics. Even with a tougher test on the mound as Richardson enters the contest with a WHIP of 1.174, the Padres offense should neutralize his ability of keeping runners out of scoring position with their top of the league mark in Team Total Hits and apply pressure to him from the opening pitch.
