With Logan Webb struggling in his efforts of avoiding contact, expect the Atlanta Braves underperforming offense to round back into form and open up the scoring early in their contest. Before that takes place, we target the matchup between the Oakland Athletics and New York Mets as both offenses get the benefit of swinging against a pair of unproductive pitchers.

Once looking like a lock to make the playoffs, the Braves lead for the last wildcard spot has steadily decreased since their recent cold stretch of play. With a little over a month left of play, the Braves possess just a two game lead over four viable playoff contenders. One of those teams jockeying for a playoff spot is the San Francisco Giants as they continue to climb up the wildcard standings.
Should the Giants want to continue to close the gap on the Atlanta Braves and grab the last wildcard spot, then their offense will need to round back into form after dropping to league average in Team Total Hits, RBIs, Total Runs Scored, and On Base Percentage. Injuries have derailed their offensive progression as of late, yet the Giants still field plenty of production in the top of their order to remain competitive enough to open up the scoring early.
Better yet, they are set to face off against the Braves Max Fried who has struggled with keeping opposing runners off the bases. While Fried has managed to minimize the damage done with an ERA of 3.56, his WHIP of 1.238 indicates that negative regression looms large. It also doesn’t help that his defense continues to struggle as the Braves enter the contest ranked near dead last in Defensive Efficiency.
On the other side of the field, the Braves vaunted top of their order is set to face off against the Giants Logan Webb. After entering the year listed as a contender for the NL Cy Young award, Webb quickly fell out of contention as teams continued to make contact against him at an alarming rate. Expect the Braves offense to test him early as he enters the contest with a WHIP of 1.248, an astonishing 156 Hits Against, and 58 Earned Runs Allowed.

Like the Giants, the New York Mets also find themselves in playoff contention as they are currently just two games back from the Braves in the wildcard standings. With the Phillies possessing a sizable lead for first in the NL East division standings, the Mets hopes of making the playoffs hinge on grabbing the last wildcard spot. They are not alone in their pursuit as the Chicago Cubs and Cincinnati Reds are also in wildcard contention.
Should the Mets want to break from the pack, then their offense must continue to play at a high rate as their pitching staff continues to give them minimal support. Luckily for New York, their offense will be given the opportunity to do so as the Athletics Mitch Spence has struggled with limiting opposing offensive production as he takes the mound with a WHIP of 1.311 and over one Hit Against him per inning.
As for the Athletics, their lowly offense will be given an opportunity to play at a more productive rate as they are set to face off against the Mets Jose Quintana. Quintana has struggled with his command this season, resulting in either a Walk or a Hit Against at a high rate. Entering Thursday’s contest, Quintana takes the mound with a ERA of 4.10, a WHIP of 1.248, 46 Batters Walked, and 110 Hits Against.
