In a hotly contested matchup between two teams jockeying for a wildcard berth, both the Atlanta Braves and San Francisco Giants are in a position to open up the scoring early against two struggling pitchers. Well before that takes place, we focus on the matchup between the Washington Nationals and Baltimore Orioles as Trevor Rogers gives the Nats lowly offense a chance to play at a competitive level.

Once listed as one of the favorites to win the World Series, the Atlanta Braves are now in the midst of a five way battle for the last wildcard spot. One of those teams is their opponent in Tuesday night’s main event as the San Francisco Giants continue to climb up the wildcard standings. That brings an added excitement to their contest, especially when both offenses are in a position to succeed from the opening pitch.
An uptick in offensive production is exactly what the Braves offense needs as they continue to rank well below league average in Team Total Hits, RBIs, Total Runs Scored, and On Base Percentage. An oddity for a unit that fields one of the better top of the orders in the league, yet since the loss of reigning NL MVP Ronald Acuna Jr the Braves have struggled mightily in their efforts of recouping his loss of production.
Against the Giants Kyle Harrison, the Braves offense is in a position to round back into productive form as Harrison has struggled with keeping opposing runners off the bases and out of scoring position as his WHIP of 1.292 and FIP of 4.23 indicates. It also does not help that he is supported by one of the worst defenses in the league as the Giants back end ranks 28th in Defensive Efficiency.
On the other side of the field, the Braves roll out Charlie Morton who has severely underwhelmed this season as he takes the mound with an ERA of 4.47, WHIP of 1.308, FIP of 4.76, 43 Batters Walked, 107 Hits Against, and 57 Earned Runs Allowed. Like Harrison, Morton also suffers from poor defensive play as the Braves defense ranks well below league average in Defensive Efficiency.

Like the Braves and Giants, the Baltimore Orioles also find themselves in a must win situation as they are in a tight race with the New York Yankees for the AL East division title. Winning the AL East this year comes with a massive advantage for the playoffs as the winner of the division will most likely receive one of the two byes as both the Orioles and Yankees possess the best records in the AL.
Fortunately for Baltimore, their offense finds themselves in a position to open up the scoring early against the Nationals Jake Irvin as he has struggled with avoiding contact and limiting opposing scoring opportunities. Taking the mound with an ERA 3.76, a FIP of 4.11, and 123 Hits Against, expect Baltimore to test him from the opening pitch as their offense ranks above league average in Team Total Hits, RBIs, Total Runs Scored, and On Base Percentage.
As for the Nationals, their offense will get the opportunity to play at a more competitive rate as they are set to face off against the Orioles newly acquired Trevor Rogers. It’s been a 2024 campaign to forget for Rogers as he enters Tuesday’s contest against the Nationals with an ERA of 4.71, a WHIP of 1.561, FIP of 4.50, 51 Batters Walked, 128 Hits Against, and 60 Earned Runs Allowed.
