We kick off our Tuesday targeting a potential NLCS preview when the current World Series betting favorites Los Angeles Dodgers battle it out against the NL East leading Philadelphia Phillies. Shortly after that takes place, we turn our sights towards the matchup between the Oakland Athletics and Boston Red Sox as both offenses are in a position to take advantage against a pair of underwhelming arms on the mound.

With the Braves steadily regressing, it’s looking more likely that the Los Angeles Dodgers and Philadelphia Phillies are on a crash course to matchup against each other in the NLCS. A shame that only one team can move on to the World Series as both teams can make a case for being the rightful favorite to win it all, but will still make for an exciting showdown nonetheless.
Should the Phillies want to make a statement and potentially leap over the Dodgers as the rightful betting favorite, then their offense will need to get out to a hot start and set a scoring pace too fast for the vaunted Dodgers to keep up with. On paper, the Phillies offense is capable of doing just that as they enter the contest ranked top-6 in Team Total Hits, RBIs, Total Runs Scored, and On Base Percentage.
Better yet, their elite top of their order will be presented with a beautiful opportunity to score early in the contest as the Dodgers Bobby Miller has had a rough start to his 2024 campaign. Miller has struggled with keeping opposing batters off the bases and out of scoring position, possessing a WHIP of 1.600. That spells potential disaster against an elite contact hitting unit, especially with former two time Total Hits leader Trea Turner back from injury.
As for the Dodgers, their elite top of the order is presented a far tougher opponent on the mound as current NL Cy Young betting favorite Zack Wheeler is set to take the mound. While an elite talent in his own right, Wheeler is far from perfect as he has a tendency to walk at a high rate which puts him in danger of being scored against should they get into scoring position. Expect Shohei Ohtani, Freddie Freeman, and Will Smith to neutralize Wheeler’s production, making him as vulnerable as ever to give up an early run.

While a matchup between the Oakland Athletics and Boston Red Sox is far less appealing than our previously mentioned potential NLCS showdown, it still presents a valuable YRFI as both offenses should succeed from the opening pitch against a pair of underwhelming pitchers set to take the mound.
That bodes well for the Athletics as their offense can use any help it can get, ranking well below league average in Team Total Hits, RBIs, Total Runs Scored, and On Base Percentage. The Red Sox Brayan Bello will give them as good a chance as any to be competitive from the opening pitching as he takes the mound with an ERA of 5.19, a WHIP of 1.449, 83 Total Hits Allowed, and 45 Earned Runs Against.
As for the Red Sox, their offense has been one of the more pleasant surprises in the league as they continue to rank above league average in the same previously mentioned offensive metrics. With little to no help from his defense that ranks bottom six in Defensive Efficiency, expect the Red Sox offense to maximize their scoring opportunities against the Athletics Joey Estes who enters the contest with an ERA of 4.39 and a FIP of 4.13.
