Thursday’s slate may be small, but there are still two YRFIs that are worth a wager as a pair of pitchers are set to take the mound against above-average batting units. Each team listed ranks in the top half of the league in on-base percentage, putting themselves in a scoring position to secure a run early in the contest. It has been a nightmarish start to the season for the Houston Astros, starting off their 2024 campaign just 10-19 and at the bottom of the AL West standings. Granted their unfortunate start can be pointed towards poor endgame variance with positive regression looming large and sportsbooks echo that sentiment as they still have the Astros as one of the top teams in the league per their current World Series odds.
Should the Astros want to claw back up the standings, then it will have to be off the backs of their high-powered offense which ranks top-5 in total hits and on-base percentage. They field an elite top of the order that can rival the best of them with Jose Altuve, Alex Bregman, Yordan Alvarez, and Kyle Tucker all possessing an elite blend of power and contact ability.
They now get the opportunity to tee off against the Guardians' Logan Allen, a young pitcher who has severely underwhelmed so far this season. Allen comes into this contest with an ERA of 5.46, a WHIP of 1.404, 26 strikeouts, 11 batters walked, 33 hits allowed, and 19 earned runs against in just six games played.
Luckily for Allen, a majority of the team’s production stems from their offense as they rank well above average in total hits and on-base percentage to mask his inefficiencies on defense. Their team walk rate is low, but they make up for it with their contact ability and knack for avoiding leaving runners stranded on base which maximizes their scoring opportunities.
The Guardians offense now gets to face off against the Astros struggling Spencer Arrighetti who has had a season to forget as he currently has an ERA of 10.97 and a WHIP of 2.344. His high WHIP shows opposing offenses have had no issue with getting multiple runners on base, now giving the Guardians an opportunity to put a man in scoring position and in a great spot to potentially cash the YRFI.

After a thrilling Cubs 1-0 victory over the Mets that came down to a throw-out at home plate, both teams now face off again in a matchup that is expected to feature plenty of more offensive production. Both teams go deep into their pitching rotation, trotting out two pitchers who have mightily struggled so far this season.
After winning the previous matchup off the backs of their defense, the Cubs now need to somehow find that same level of production with Ben Brown who has flirted with disaster so far this season. Brown has an ERA of 4.30 and a WHIP of 1.174 but has just 22 strikeouts in 7 games played. Opposing teams are making contact, but have yet to do it consistently to the open area of the field to score at a higher rate.
As for the Mets, they trot out Adrian Houser who has had an abysmal start to his season. Houser takes the mound with an ERA of 8.37, a WHIP of 1.90, just 14 strikeouts, 16 batters walked, 29 hits allowed, and 22 earned runs against in just five games played. He seemingly has no control of his command and now has to face a Cubs offense that ranks top-10 in walk rate.
