Another week is in the books and the MLB regular season rolls on with another jam-packed Monday slate. Potential Cy Young contender Grayson Rodriguez is slated to face a dangerous top of the New York Yankees batting order while the Detroit Tigers and St. Louis Cardinals offenses look to round back into form against two underwhelming pitchers. Monday’s slate kicks off with an exciting matchup between the New York Yankees and Baltimore Orioles, two teams who are expected to battle at the top of the AL East standings all season long. The Yankees currently have a one-game lead in the standings, backed behind an efficient offense that is set to show out once again against potential AL Cy Young contender Grayson Rodriguez.
Just because Grayson Rodriguez is a potential contender for the Cy Young award, does not mean that he is not vulnerable to getting scored against early. He comes into this matchup with a lackluster stat line when compared to other Cy Young contenders, possessing an ERA of 4.45, a WHIP of 1.412, 34 strikeouts, 31 hits allowed, nine batters walked, and 14 earned runs against in five games played.
His high WHIP mark is especially inviting to fade against, indicating that he averages over one batter on base per inning. That means opposing offenses are finding themselves with batters in scoring position with a runner on second base, being one single away from bringing that runner in to cash the YRFI.
His hyper-aggressive pitching nature may leave him prone to getting rocked early, especially against an elite top of the Yankees batting order that features the lethal duo of Juan Soto and Aaron Judge. Soto excels at extending pitches, now getting the benefit of a narrowed batters box with opposing pitchers having to get more aggressive to punch him out in order to avoid having him on base with Aaron Judge following after.
Speaking of the Yankees, they trot out the struggling Clarke Schmidt who has seen himself creep up the pitching rotation with the injury to star ace Gerrit Cole. While Schmidt has managed to keep his ERA low with a 3.55, his high WHIP of 1.461 means that negative regression is looming large. Schmidt is playing with fire with runners being left stranded on base, now having to pitch even tighter against a dangerous Orioles batting lineup who ranks top-10 in total hits.

Shortly after our first YRFI of the day gets underway, our next one starts with the St. Louis Cardinals facing off against the Detroit Tigers. Both teams were projected to battle it out for the top spot of their respective divisions, yet both have gotten off to a bumpy start with far too many inconsistencies that has hampered their ability to make a run.
While pitching has not been each team’s issue as both are above average in team total ERA, both Steven Matz and Kenta Maeda have not helped in that regard as two struggling pitchers. Steven Matz for example comes into the contest with an ERA of 5.55, a WHIP of 1.603, just 16 strikeouts, nine batters walked, 30 hits allowed, and 15 earned runs against.
Kenta Maeda has not fared much better, possessing an even lower ERA of 5.96 and a WHIP of 1.368. Like Matz, Maeda possesses a low strikeout rate with only 16 total strikeouts in five games played so far this season. While both offenses have struggled to get it going at this point of the season, positive regression looms large for two units that were projected to be above the pack in terms of batting production.
