Best YRFI Bets Today: Start Your Day With an Afternoon YRFI

After our first 0-2 day in this daily YRFI series, it’s time to get back on track with two more bets for Tuesday’s slate. Afternoon baseball is back, and with it comes a YRFI in the Detroit Tigers and Pittsburgh Pirates game while we have an evening wager to end our night when the Los Angeles Dodgers face off against the Minnesota Twins.

Los Angeles Dodgers vs. Minnesota Twins - Tyler Glasnow vs. Louie Varland (7:40 PM, EST)

It may seem unsettling to fade Tyler Glasnow in the form of a YRFI, but the once-dominant pitcher has gotten off to a rocky start since joining the Dodgers. He has seemingly lost command of his pitch, starting the regular season with seven walks and eight hits in three games played. An odd start for a potential Cy Young candidate, and one that is due to positively regress back towards the mean as he has built a career as a go-to ace. 

Still, momentum is very real and Glasnow is a fade target until he can prove that he can round back into elite form. The top of the Twins batting order will do him no favors as they have a productive hitting unit, especially with the always dangerous Carlos Correa in the top of the order who has a knack to extend pitches to get on base.

As for the Dodgers, they face Louie Varland who has struggled since the calendar turned to 2024. His struggles started with spring training, finishing the preseason with an ERA of 6.30, a WHIP of 1.300, 22 hits allowed, four batters walked, and an astonishing 14 earned runs against in six games played.

His regular season performance has not fared much better, starting his campaign with an ERA of 6.75, a WHIP of 2.000, six hits allowed, two batters walked, and three earned runs against in one game played. His WHIP of 2.000 is especially alarming as that means opposing batters were at least averaging two hits per inning while getting someone into scoring position.

He now faces a Dodgers lineup that currently has four batters in the top 10 for most regular hits this season. Three of their top-10 hitters sit at the top of their batting lineup with Mookie Betts, Shohei Ohtani, and Freddie Freeman looking to ride their hot streak and get the scoring started early in the contest.

Detroit Tigers vs. Pittsburgh Pirates - Casey Mize vs. Martin Perez (12:35 PM, EST)

It’s a battle between two teams who have exceeded preseason expectations with hot starts to their year, yet both have already started to show regression while falling back down to reality with cumulative losses. A big reason for their early season success has been due to their hot bats, now looking to get back on track in the scoring department with an early run in this one.

As for who will be throwing in this afternoon showdown, the Tigers trot out Casey Mize who has consistently underwhelmed in his young career with no signs of progression for his 2024 campaign. Mize started the 2024 regular season with an ERA of 6.23, a WHIP of 1.615, five hits allowed, and three earned runs against. The Pirates' batting lineup isn’t exactly ideal, but Mize has also shown early in his career that he may not be a productive pitcher which can elevate any opposing batters' play.

As for the Pirates, they roll out Martin Perez who has flirted with danger so far this season. While he only has three earned runs against in two games played for an ERA of 2.45, Perez has been very fortunate that opposing teams have not been able to bring more in as they have had no issue with making contact against him. Perez also has 12 hits allowed and a WHIP of 1.545, meaning negative regression is looming.
