With the Texas Rangers top of their order struggling to make contact at a league average rate, the Seattle Mariners Bryce Miller will have the opportunity to round back into form after a sluggish start to his season. Shortly after their opening pitch, we turn our attention towards the contest between the New York Mets and Athletics as JP Sears possesses more than enough arm talent to neutralize the Mets star studded offense.

Even though the Texas Rangers are 9-4 and are in sole possession of first place in the AL East division standings, negative regression looms large as their offense has struggled to play at a competitive level. As of writing, the Rangers rank well below league average in Team Total Hits, RBIs, Total Runs Scored, and On Base Percentage. To make matters worse for the Rangers, Wyatt Langford recently suffered an injury and was placed on their 10-day injured list.
The Rangers struggles on offense bodes well for Bryce Miller as the Seattle Mariners pitcher has yet to find his footing this season. In his two starts, Miller is averaging an ERA of 5.73, a WHIP of 1.636, and 1.18 Hits Against per Inning Pitched. A massive difference from his Spring Training performance as Miller finished the preseason with a WHIP of 0.907. With the Rangers struggling to make contact, expect Miller to round back into preseason form.
On the other side of the field, the former NL Cy Young award winner Jacob deGrom also finds himself in a great position to put together a dominant performance as he faces off against a Seattle offense who ranks below average in the same offensive metrics. Unlike Miller, deGrom has excelled at keeping opposing runners off the bases as he currently possesses a WHIP of 1.125 while averaging less than one Hit Against per Inning Pitched.

Later in the night, we fade another underachieving lineup as the New York Mets star studded offense ranks in the bottom half of the board in Team Total Hits, RBIs, Runs Scored, and On Base Percentage. Especially with Francisco Lindor struggling to recapture last year’s success as the Mets leadoff man is averaging less than one Hit per game and an OPS lower than 0.700. Without his production, the Mets offense have been prone to slow starts to their contests.
His struggles, along with the rest of the Mets offense, are poised to persist as they are set to face off against the Athletics JP Sears who has excelled at avoiding contact this season. Heading into Friday, Sears is averaging less than one Hit Against per Inning Pitched while generating a ERA of 3.46 and a WHIP of 1.000. Even though his Strikeout Rate is low, expect Sears to still work the plate and take advantage of the Mets lack of contact ability.
While JP Sears has struggled to generate Strikeouts, Griffin Canning excels at creating Whiffs as the Mets pitcher averages over one Strikeout per Inning Pitched. His aggressiveness over the plate has been rewarded as Canning is averaging an ERA of 2.79 and a FIP of 3.82. The Mets back end also limits the amount of contact variance in his starts as their defense currently ranks above league average in Defensive Efficiency and in Fielding Percentage.

San Francisco Giants vs. New York Yankees - Robbie Ray vs. Marcus Stroman - Robbie Ray’s FIP of 6.97 will be tested from the opening pitch as he faces off against the reigning AL MVP Aaron Judge and a New York Yankees offense who ranks above league average in Team Total Hits and On Base Percentage.
Los Angeles Angels vs. Houston Astros - Jack Kochanowicz vs. Ronel Blanco - With the Houston Astros Ronel Blanco averaging over one Hit Against per Inning Pitched and a stunningly high WHIP of 2.100, his lack of command increases the Los Angeles Angels chances of getting on base early and scoring a run in the first inning.
