With Shota Imanaga expected to make his return to the mound, the Texas Rangers struggles on offense are poised to persist as the NL Cy Young contender has excelled at avoiding contact this season. Before their afternoon matchup takes place, we turn our attention towards the Miami Marlins and New York Mets as both offenses are set to face off against a pair of productive arms.

After exploding onto the scene in his rookie year, Shota Imanaga has carried over his momentum into this season as the Chicago Cubs star pitcher is averaging an ERA of 0.98 and a WHIP of 0.709. Opposing offenses have struggled to make contact against him as Imanaga is averaging just 0.39 Hits Against per Innings Pitched and less than one Earned Run per game. A stunning feat when backed behind a defense who ranks below average in Defensive Efficiency.
Against Texas, Imanaga will have the opportunity to sustain his high level of play as he faces off against a Rangers offense who ranks below league average in Team Total Hits, RBIs, Total Runs Scored, and On Base Percentage. Especially with the Rangers top of their order struggling mightily as Marcus Semien, Corey Seager, and Wyatt Langford all average less than one Hit per game while possessing a Batting Average lower than 0.250.
On the other side of the field, Tyler Mahle is tasked with a much tougher assignment as he faces off against a Cubs offense who ranks near the top of the board in the same previously mentioned offensive metrics. Even with the Cubs playing at a high level, Mahle has proven he is capable of neutralizing their offense as he excels at keeping opposing runners out of scoring position by averaging an ERA of 1.35 and more than one Strikeout per Inning Pitched.

It’s been a slow start to the year for the New York Mets revamped offense as their lineup ranks in the bottom ten in Team Total Hits, RBIs, Total Runs Scored, and On Base Percentage. A stunning start after entering the season projected to be one of the best units in the league. Other than Pete Alonso and the newly acquired Juan Soto, no one on the Mets average at least one Hit per Inning Pitched while only Alonso possesses an OPS higher than 0.900.
Their struggles bodes well for Max Meyer as the Miami Marlins pitcher is an aggressive arm who deals a majority of his damage throwing inside the zone. While this has helped him generate Strikeouts, it also leaves him prone to getting Hit as his WHIP of 1.371 indicates. Fortunately for Meyer, his defense is capable of masking his struggles should contact variance go against him as the Marlins back end ranks above league average in Defensive Efficiency.
While the Mets offense has struggled, Tylor Megill has thrived as the Mets pitcher is averaging an ERA of 0.87, a WHIP of 0.871, and a FIP of 2.29. Even though his Strikeout Rate is low, Megill still excels at avoiding contact as he is averaging less than one Hit Against per Inning Pitched. Expect Megill to sustain his high marks on the mound as he faces off against a Marlins offense who also struggles to make contact and get on base at a league average rate.

Los Angeles Dodgers vs. Washington Nationals - Landon Knack vs. Jake Irvin - With Jake Irvin averaging almost two runners on base per Inning Pitched, his outing against the Los Angeles Dodgers may get ugly in a hurry as he faces off against the best top of the order in the league with Mookie Betts and the reigning NL MVP Shohei Ohtani kicking things off.
Baltimore Orioles vs. Arizona Diamondbacks - Dean Kremer vs. Brandon Pfaadt - We target the YRFI in the conclusion of the series between Baltimore and Arizona as another pair of struggling pitchers are set to take the mound to battle it out against two offenses who rank above league average in Team Total Hits, RBIs, Total Runs Scored, and On Base Percentage.
