With the New York Yankees forcing a game five, both Jack Flaherty and Gerrit Cole are projected to take the mound for the second time this series. Both pitchers managed to keep a clean sheet early on in game one until the Dodgers brought in a run in the bottom of the fifth inning. One early run aside, Gerrit Cole was dominant as he finished the contest with an ERA of 1.50 and a WHIP of 0.667. His individual production is vital as the Yankees defense has crashed down to 13th overall in Defensive Efficiency.
Even with the projected NL MVP Shohei Ohtani noticeably injured, he is still capable of getting into scoring position as a lethal contact hitter. That spells potential disaster with Freddie Freeman hitting two spots behind him as his bat is red hot after generating four total Hits, three Home Runs, and seven RBIs in the first four games of the series. Fortunately for the Yankees, Cole has shown he can sustain a high level of play as he finished the regular season with a WHIP of 1.126 and FIP of 3.69.
On the other side of the field, Jack Flaherty will look to build on his lead for most Strikeouts as he continues to take advantage of a reeling Yankees offense. Once ranked near the top of the board in Team Total Hits, the Yankees have dropped down to 12th as their bats have cooled off. Aaron Judge has been especially disappointing since the start of the World Series as he has only made contact once in 12 at bats while striking out seven times.
Judge, as well as the rest of the Yankees top of their order, may continue to struggle as Flaherty has excelled at avoiding contact. Throughout the regular season, Flaherty averaged less than one Hit Against per Inning Pitched while generating an ERA of 3.17, a WHIP of 1.068, and FIP of 3.48. Better yet for Flaherty’s chances of keeping the Yankees off the bases and out of scoring position, he is surrounded by a productive defense as the Dodgers enter game five ranked second overall in Defensive Efficiency.
