Even with the Houston Astros offense firing on all cylinders, their top of the order will struggle to maintain their elite level of offensive production as they draw a tough assignment against the Seattle Mariners Bryce Miller. Before that takes place, we turn our attention towards the matchup between the Chicago Cubs and Philadelphia Phillies as a pair of productive arms are projected to take the mound.

With only six games remaining in the regular season, the Seattle Mariners are in desperate need of a win as they are currently two games back from the Kansas City Royals and Detroit Tigers in the wildcard standings for the last wildcard spot in the playoffs. Especially since they are nearly statistically eliminated from winning the AL West division title, sitting five games back from the Houston Astros in the AL West division standings.
Should the Mariners want to secure a pivotal win against the Astros and keep their playoff hopes alive, then they will need to shut down their high powered offense as Houston ranks well above league average in Team Total Hits, RBIs, Total Runs Scored, and On Base Percentage. The top of their order plays a major role in their elite marks on offense, kicking things off with Jose Altuve, Yordan Alvarez, and Kyle Tucker.
While the Astros offense is an elite unit in their own right, maintaining their high marks will be tough to come by against a defense that ranks first overall in Defensive Efficiency. Especially with Bryce Miller set to take the mound, having to swing against a pitcher who excels at neutralizing opposing offenses as his WHIP of 0.992 and ERA of 3.06 indicates. With Miller’s production on the mound, expect the Astros offense to struggle with getting into scoring position.
On the other side of the field, the Astros Hunter Brown gets a more favorable matchup as he throws against a Mariners offense that ranks below league average in the same previously mentioned offensive metrics. The Mariners inability to generate offensive production bodes well for Brown as he has struggled with keeping opposing runners off the bases. Entering Monday’s contest against the Astros, Brown takes the mound with a WHIP of 1.280.

While the Chicago Cubs have been statistically eliminated from making the playoffs, the NL East leading Philadelphia Phillies still have more to play for. With six games remaining in the regular season, the Phillies currently possess just a three game lead over the Milwaukee Brewers in the overall standings for the second bye in the playoffs. Securing a bye is vital for the Phillies as it bolsters their chances of making a deep run in October as one of the betting favorites to win the World Series.
Luckily for the Phillies, their regressing defense gets an opportunity to round back into form against a Cubs offense that struggles to make contact at a league average rate. Chicago’s struggles with making contact are poised to persist as they are set to face off against the Phillies Aaron Nola who excels at avoiding contact. In 31 starts, Nola takes the mound averaging less than one Hit Against per Inning Pitched while generating a WHIP of 1.173 and a ERA of 3.54.
On the other side of the field, the Cubs are projected to roll out Justin Steele but have yet to make an official announcement as of writing. Should Steele get the start, the Phillies offense will be in a position to struggle as the Cubs pitcher has also excelled at avoiding contact while averaging more than one Strikeout per Inning Pitched. Be sure to monitor who gets the starting nod for the Cubs as this NRFI would be a pass should Chicago utilize their bullpen instead.
