Not only does targeting the matchup between the Chicago White Sox and San Diego Padres allow us to fade the White Sox offense, but we also get to back Garrett Crochet who has been a productive arm for their pitching staff. Before that takes place, we focus on the NL East divisional matchup between the Philadelphia Phillies and New York Mets as a pair of productive pitchers are set to take the mound.

While the Chicago White Sox season has been a wash, the San Diego Padres find themselves in a great position to make the playoffs as they are currently 2.5 games ahead of the Arizona Diamondbacks, New York Mets, and Atlanta Braves in the wildcard standings. Only three of the four contenders will be able to make the playoffs, making it vital for the Padres to maintain their lead for the first wildcard spot.
Fortunately for San Diego, they are presented with a fantastic opportunity to pad their lead in the wildcard standings as they face off against the worst team in the league. Seemingly nothing went right for the White Sox this season as they enter the last stretch of play ranked well below league average in Team Total Hits, RBIs, Total Runs Scored, On Base Percentage, Defensive Efficiency, and Team Total Pitching ERA.
Their lack of offensive production is especially inviting to target as it puts the Padres Joe Musgrove in a position to round back into form. Musgrove has struggled with keeping opposing runners off the bases and out of scoring position this season, taking the mound with a ERA of 4.23 and a WHIP of 1.225. Against an offense that ranks near dead last in both Contact Rate and On Base Percentage, we can expect Musgrove to generate a higher level of production while making quick work of the top of their order.
On the other side of the field, the Padres offense draws a much tougher assignment as they are set to face off against Garrett Crochet. Crochet has been one of Chicago’s lone sources of consistent production this season, taking the mound averaging less than one Hit Against per Inning Pitched while generating a FIP of 2.84 and WHIP of 1.087. His ability to avoid contact is especially crucial in this matchup as the Padres offense ranks first overall in Team Total Hits.

While the Philadelphia Phillies are on pace to secure the top overall seed in the NL, the New York Mets are in a battle for one of the three wildcard spots as the Atlanta Braves, New York Mets, and Arizona Diamondbacks are all within two games of each other in the wildcard standings. To add more pressure to the pack, the San Diego Padres sit above all of them with a 2.5 game lead for the first wildcard spot.
Should the Mets want to create separation from the rest of the contenders, then their defense will need to neutralize the elite Phillies offense. David Peterson is capable of doing just that as he has excelled at limiting opposing scoring opportunities with his own individual production, taking the mound with an ERA of 2.85 and a FIP of 3.86. Better yet, his back end excels in coverage as the Mets defense enters the contest ranked ninth overall in Defensive Efficiency.
As for the Phillies, they roll out former NL Cy Young contender Cristopher Sanchez who will be tasked with shutting down the red hot New York Mets offense. A daunting task as the Mets offense ranks well above league average in Team Total Hits, RBIs, Total Runs Scored, and On Base Percentage, yet Sanchez has been equally as dominant as he has only conceded 16 Hits Against and 3 Earned Runs since the start of September.
