Normally a team to back for our daily YRFI series, we fade the New York Yankees elite top of their order on Wednesday as they are set to face off against the Seattle Mariners dominant Bryce Miller. Well before that takes place, we target the afternoon matchup between the Oakland Athletics and Chicago Cubs as both offenses are tasked with having to face off against a pair of productive pitchers on the mound.
For more information about the NRFI market and what factors into them being worth a wager, check out our breakdown of Daily No Run First Inning.

With 11 games remaining in the regular season, the New York Yankees are inching closer to clinching the AL East division title as they currently possess a comfortable lead over the Baltimore Orioles. By clinching the division title, the Yankees will also increase their chances of making a run to the World Series as they will receive a bye for the first round of the playoffs as they are also six games ahead of the AL West leading Houston Astros.
Should the Yankees want to continue to strengthen their position at the top of the AL East division standings, then their defense must take advantage of the Seattle Mariners anemic offense. Offensive production has been tough to come by for Seattle as they enter the final stretch of the season ranked near dead last across the board in Team Total Hits, RBIs, Total Runs Scored, and On Base Percentage.
The Mariners struggles with generating offensive production bodes well for the Yankees as they roll out Nestor Cortes who has had a roller coaster of a season. After getting off to a poor start, Cortes has steadily rounded into competitive form as his opposing contact rate declined. Heading into Wednesday’s contest against the Mariners, Cortes takes the mound with a WHIP of 1.152 while averaging less than one Hit Against per Inning Pitched.
On the other side of the field, the Yankees top of their order draw a much tougher assignment as they get the unfortunate favor of having to swing against the Mariners Bryce Miller. Miller has excelled at limiting opposing offensive production this season, entering the contest with an ERA of 3.12, a WHIP of 0.992, just 127 Hits Against, and 58 Earned Runs Allowed in 29 games played. Better yet, Miller is supported by the best defense in the league as the Mariners rank first overall in Defensive Efficiency.

Well before our first NRFI, we target the afternoon matchup between the Oakland Athletics and Chicago Cubs as a pair of productive pitchers are set to take the mound. Limiting the Athletics offensive production is vital for the Cubs as they are in a must win situation, sitting six games back from the New York Mets in the wildcard standings for the last wildcard spot in the playoffs.
Luckily for Chicago, their defense will be in a position to neutralize the Athletics offense as Justin Steele is set to take the mound. In 22 starts, Steele has excelled at limiting the number of opposing scoring opportunities as he enters the contest with an ERA of 3.09 and a WHIP of 1.086. Against an offense that ranks below league average in Team Total Hits, RBIs, Total Runs Scored, and On Base Percentage, expect Steele to make quick work of the Athletics top of their order.
As for Oakland, they trot out Brady Basso who has been brilliant in his minimal appearances so far this season. In five brief outings, Basso has excelled at keeping opposing runners off the bases and out of scoring position as he takes the mound with a WHIP of 0.886, a ERA of 1.23, and a FIP of 2.97. His elite individual production on the mound is especially vital as the Athletics defense as a whole ranks a pedestrian 22nd overall in Defensive Efficiency.
