With Michael King set to take the mound, we target the matchup between the San Diego Padres and Seattle Mariners as we also get to simultaneously fade the Mariners anemic offense in the process. Well before that takes place, we focus on the afternoon contest between the Cleveland Guardians and Chicago White Sox as a pair of productive pitchers are set to take the mound.

With less than 20 games remaining in the regular season, time is quickly running out for the Seattle Mariners to cement their position in the playoffs. As of writing, the Mariners are 4.5 games back from the Houston Astros in the AL West and 3 games back from the Minnesota Twins in the wildcard standings. As for the Padres, they are in the middle of a four way battle for one of the three wildcard spots.
With each game played having massive playoff implications, this brings an added level of excitement to Wednesday’s contest between the Padres and Mariners. Especially with a pair of productive pitchers set to take the mound, making every bit of production they can generate more valuable. That spells potential trouble for the Mariners as their offense already struggles to play at a competitive rate as they rank near dead last in Team Total Hits, RBIs, Total Runs Scored, and On Base Percentage.
With a lack of offense, the Mariners must continue to rely on their defense in order to keep the contest tight enough for them to get the win. Bryan Woo is capable of doing just that as he excels at limiting the number of opposing runners on base and in scoring position as he takes the mound with an ERA of 2.36 and WHIP of 0.848. Better yet, he is supported by the best back end in the league as the Mariners defense as a whole ranks first in Defensive Efficiency.
As for the Padres, Michael King gets a far easier assignment as he gets the benefit of throwing against one of the worst offenses in baseball. With the Mariners offense failing to play at a league average rate in any of the previously mentioned offensive metrics, King should be able to make quick work of the top of their order as he averages less than one Hit Against per Inning Pitched while generating an ERA of 3.10.

Before our first NRFI gets underway, we target the afternoon matchup between the Cleveland Guardians and Chicago White Sox as both offenses should continue to struggle with getting on base at a league average rate as a pair of productive pitchers are set to take the mound. Avoiding an embarrassing loss is vital for the Guardians as they enter the final stretch of the season with just a 3.5 game lead for first in the AL Central.
Should the Guardians want to secure the win and pad their lead at the top of the division standings, then Matthew Boyd must continue to excel at limiting opposing offensive production. In his minimal appearances so far this season, Boyd takes the mound with an ERA of 2.20 and WHIP of 0.767. Even with unsustainable metrics, Boyd should continue to play at a high rate as he is supported by a defense that ranks fourth overall in Defensive Efficiency.
On the other side of the field, the White Sox also roll out a pitcher who has thrived in his brief starts this season as Davis Martin takes the mound with an ERA of 3.29 while averaging less than one Hit Against per Inning Pitched. His WHIP is concerningly high, but the Cleveland Guardians offense has continued to struggle with getting into scoring position as they rank well below league average in Team Total Hits and On Base Percentage.
