The Yankees and Cubs have a lot of talented bats, but the pitchers will have the edge in the first inning this afternoon.
Starting today, the Yankees will have Clarke Schmidt (5-3, 2.52 ERA, 1,14 WHIP). The 28-year-old will be making his first start after returning from the IL, where he had been since May 27. While betting on a pitcher to come out strong after that kind of absence is risky, he is good enough to get the job done.
Clarke was having an incredible season before his injury. He went 3-2 in May with a 1.82 ERA, dominating several talented lineups. Though the Cubs have been hot at the plate lately, their lineup isn’t talented enough to keep it up. Look for them to sputter against Clarke in at least the first inning tonight.
The Cubs will have Javier Assad (7-4, 3.21 ERA, 1.36 WHIP) starting opposite Clarke today. The righty had a rough run in June and July but settled back down in August. He went 2-1 with a 3.16 ERA across six starts last month.
Assad has done his best work when at home this season. He is 3-1 with a 2.30 ERA at Wrigley Field this season, where he will be starting today.
Jose Berrios (14-9, 3.59 ERA, 1.15 WHIP) completely turned things around in August. After struggling over the previous three months, he went 5-1 with a 2.50 ERA across six starts last month. He has now won five straight starts, showing how hot the veteran has been.
Berrios struggled on the road this season, but that has changed over the last month as he has won three straight starts away from Toronto. His last start was one of his best, as he shut out the Twins on three hits and one walk over six innings. As Dangerous as the Braves lineup is, we are rolling with the red-hot righty tonight.
The Braves will have promising young pitchers on the mound in Spencer Schwellenbach (5-6, 3.69 ERA, 1.07 WHIP). The 24-year-old rookie has been incredible this season, allowing more than three runs just once since July 1.
The Blue Jays offense has been far better since the All-Star break, but they are still going scoreless in the first inning 73.05%. Things won’t be easy when they face Schwellenback in the first inning tonight. The team will be seeing the talented rookie for the first time with limited scouting reports available.
It will take time for Toronto to figure out the Braves’ starter, leading us to lock in this bet.
