With the Seattle Mariners' chances of making the playoffs continuing to dwindle, they trot out Logan Gilbert in an attempt to shut down the Los Angeles Dodgers' elite offense and steal a win to remain in wildcard contention. Well before that takes place, we also target the matchup between the Chicago White Sox and San Francisco Giants as both offenses are in a position to struggle against a pair of productive pitchers.

With the Houston Astros steadily growing their lead for first in the AL West division standings, it’s looking more likely that the Seattle Mariners will have to try and leap over either the Kansas City Royals or Minnesota Twins for a wildcard spot. The issue with going down that route is that both AL Central clubs have continued to win at a high rate and are now six games ahead of the Mariners in the wildcard standings.
Should the Mariners want to salvage their season and make the playoffs, then they will need to continue to rely on their defense as their offense gives them little to no competitive production. Entering Wednesday’s contest against the Dodgers, the Mariners' defense ranks first overall in Team Total Pitching ERA and Defensive Efficiency while their offense ranks near dead last in Team Total Hits, RBIs, Total Runs Scored, and On Base Percentage.
Their defense will need to continue to play at an elite level, especially since they are set to face off against a Dodgers offense that ranks well above league average in the same previously mentioned offensive metrics. Fortunately for Seattle, Logan Gilbert has shown that he is more than capable of shutting down an offense like the Dodgers as he takes the mound with an ERA of 2.96, a WHIP of 0.882, and FIP of 3.29.
On the other side of the field, the Dodgers' newly acquired Jack Flaherty gets the benefit of throwing against the anemic Mariners offense. Largely overshadowed by current AL Cy Young betting favorite Tarik Skubal in his time with Detroit, Flaherty has quietly carved out a role as a dominant starting pitcher. Entering Wednesday’s contest, Flaherty trots out with an ERA of 3.06, a WHIP of 1.005, just 101 Hits Against, and 42 Earned Runs Allowed.

Well before our first NRFI gets underway, we focus on the matchup between the Chicago White Sox and San Francisco Giants as both offenses are poised to struggle against a pair of productive arms on the mound. Like the Mariners, the Giants' best course of making the playoffs resides on grabbing a wildcard spot as the Los Angeles Dodgers have a sizable lead over them in the NL West division standings.
Luckily for the Giants, they have a great opportunity to climb up the wildcard standings as they face off against White Sox offense that ranks near dead last across the board in Team Total Hits, RBIs, Total Runs Scored, and On Base Percentage. Their lack of contact ability bodes well for the Giants' Logan Webb as avoiding contact has been an issue for him this season, surrendering 160 Hits Against. Expect Webb to bounce back, making quick work of the White Sox top of their order in the process.
Speaking of the White Sox, Garrett Crochet gets the nod for Wednesday’s contest against the Giants. He has been one of the lone sources of production for the lowly White Sox, taking the mound with an ERA of 3.61, a WHIP of 1.067, FIP of 2.85, 176 Total Strikeouts, and just 103 Hits Against. With the Giants' offense continuing to regress to league average in the same previously mentioned offensive metrics, expect Crochet to minimize early scoring opportunities and hold them scoreless in the first inning.
