In the midst of a two game losing streak, the Los Angeles Dodgers injury riddled offense is poised to continue to struggle against the Pittsburgh Pirates efficient Mitch Keller. Before that matchup takes place, we focus on the contest between the Chicago Cubs and Chicago White Sox as both anemic offenses are set to face off against a pair of productive pitchers.

As the days get marked off the calendar, the Pirates sense of urgency continues to grow as they attempt to salvage their season. While not statistically eliminated from the playoffs, their chances of playing in October look bleak as they are five games back from a wildcard spot and nine games back from first in the NL Central. They now have the daunting task of playing the elite Dodgers offense during a crucial stretch of their season.
Fortunately for Pittsburgh, the Dodgers top of the order is far less daunting while Mookie Betts is still sidelined with an injury. His departure forces current MVP betting favorite Shohei Ohtani to lead off, allowing pitchers to use their full range of pitches against the star slugger with no one on base. With free reign to throw outside the box instead of being forced to be aggressive across the middle, there is a higher chance of punching Ohtani out.
Limiting contact opportunities is crucial for the Pirates chances of getting past the Dodgers top of their order as Pittsburgh enters the contest ranked near dead last in Defensive Efficiency. Mitch Keller may not get the same shine as his fellow teammate Paul Skenes, but he is still a productive pitcher in his own right as he takes the mound with an ERA of 3.20, a WHIP of 1.194, and a FIP of 3.75.
On the other side of the field, newly acquired Jack Flaherty is presented a beautiful opportunity to continue to succeed as he faces off against a Pirates offense that ranks below league average in Team Total Hits, RBIs, Total Runs Scored, and On Base Percentage. Flaherty has excelled at limiting the number of opposing runners on base and in scoring position, coming into the game with a WHIP of 0.959 and 140 Total Strikeouts.

Before our previously mentioned NRFI gets underway, we turn our sights towards the Crosstown Classic with the Chicago Cubs battling it out against the Chicago White Sox. The Cubs find themselves in a similar position as the Pirates, sitting 5.5 games back from a wildcard spot and 9.5 games back from the NL Central leading Milwaukee Brewers.
The Cubs now have an opportunity to shut down the worst offense in the league and climb up the wildcard standings as the White Sox offense ranks near dead last across the board in Team Total Hits, RBIs, Total Runs Scored, and On Base Percentage. Expect their struggles to continue as the Cubs Jameson Taillon has shown he can limit opposing scoring opportunities as he possesses a ERA of 3.25 and WHIP of 1.157.
As for the White Sox, they have fared far better on the defensive side as they currently rank just under league average in Defensive Efficiency. Starting pitcher Garrett Crochet has played a role in their competitive marks as one of their few consistent sources of production, entering the contest with an ERA of 3.19, a WHIP of 1.014, 162 Total Strikeouts, and just 90 Hits Against. Expect Crochet to make quick work of the Cubs offense as they also grade out poorly in the same previously mentioned offensive metrics
