After two underwhelming outings, Tarik Skubal is presented a beautiful opportunity to round back into form as he is set to face off against a struggling Seattle Mariners offense. Well before that takes place, we focus on the matchup between the San Francisco Giants and Washington Nationals as Blake Snell looks to continue to build on his momentum after finishing his last outing with a no hitter.

Even though his odds to win the AL Cy Young award continue to grow, Tarik Skubal is in the midst of two straight underwhelming outings by his standards. He fortunately got the benefit of his closest contender Corbin Burnes severely struggling in his last outing, conceding seven Hits Against, four Earned Runs Allowed, and four Total Strikeouts against the Cleveland Guardians regressing offense.
Burnes inability to capitalize on his opening swings momentum back towards Skubal, giving the Tigers ace a chance to grow on his lead for the prestigious pitching award. Skubal has as good an opportunity to strengthen his position as he can ask for, facing off against a Mariners anemic offense that ranks in the bottom five in Team Total Hits, RBIs, Total Runs Scored, and On Base Percentage.
Even with the addition of Randy Arozerena at the trade deadline, the Mariners offense is poised to continue to struggle as Skubal excels at limiting the number of opposing scoring opportunities. A case can be made that Skubal has played as the best pitcher in the league this year, taking the mound with an ERA of 2.57, a WHIP of 0.946, a FIP of 2.64, an astonishing 162 Total Strikeouts, 103 Hits Against, and just 39 Earned Runs Allowed in 22 total games played.
On the other side of the field, the AL West leading Mariners roll out George Kirby who has flirted with Cy Young award contention for his brilliant play this season as he enters the contest with an ERA of 3.04, a WHIP of 1.000, and a FIP of 2.71. Like Skubal, Kirby finds himself in a great position to continue to succeed as he faces off against a Tigers offense that continues to underwhelm by ranking well below league average in the same previously mentioned offensive metrics.

Before the nightcap between the Tigers and Mariners, we focus on the matchup between the San Francisco Giants and Washington Nationals as the Giants look to continue to climb up the wildcard standings. While a NL West division title is most likely out of their reach with the Dodgers having a 9.5 game lead over them, a playoff berth is still in their sights as they are three games back from a wildcard spot.
Should they want to continue to close the gap on the current wildcard holders, then their pitching must continue to mask their poor level of defensive production as the Giants rank 28th in Defensive Efficiency. Former Cy Young award winner Blake Snell is capable of doing just that, coming off of his first career no hitter and is now set to face off against a Nationals offense that ranks below average in Team Total Hits, RBIs, Total Runs Scored, and On Base Percentage.
As for the Nationals, they trot out Jake Irvin who has quietly excelled at limiting the number of opposing runners on base. While opposing offenses have unfortunately maximized their limited number of scoring opportunities, Irvin’s WHIP of 1.097 brings a sigh of relief for a NRFI. It also bodes well the Giants offense is currently regressing in their efforts of getting on base, sliding down to near league average in On Base Percentage.
