Monday’s slate of games is capped off by a potential NLCS preview with the injury riddled Los Angeles Dodgers set to face off against the Philadelphia Phillies in what will feature an elite pitchers duel. Before that matchup takes place, we shift our focus towards the contest between the Boston Red Sox and Kansas City Royals as both offenses are poised to struggle to generate early scoring opportunities.

As we inch closer to the finish line for the 2024 regular season, both the Philadelphia Phillies and Los Angeles Dodgers are starting to lose their sizable lead at the top of their respective division standings. The Atlanta Braves are still hovering in contention in the NL East after a disastrous 2024 campaign while the Arizona Diamondbacks and San Diego Padres are just 4.5 games back from the injury riddled Dodgers in the NL West.
Speaking of injuries, Dodgers ace pitcher Tyler Glasnow is set to take the mound after having to take a brief break in the middle of the season to deal with a back injury. While he has yet to resemble his former dominant self, Glasnow possesses enough production as a strikeout maestro to shut down a vaunted Phillies top of their batting order as he enters the contest with a WHIP of 0.959 and FIP of 2.95.
Every bit of his production will be needed against a Phillies offense that has played as one of the best units in the league. Entering Monday’s mega matchup, the Phillies rank near the top of the board in Team Total Hits, RBIs, Total Runs Scored, and On Base Percentage. Their top of the order carries a brunt of their production, fielding the powerful Kyle Schwarber, former two time Hits leader Trea Turner, and MVP contender Bryce Harper.
On the other side of the field, Aaron Nola is tasked with shutting down a Dodgers offense that continues to deal with injuries. Freddie Freeman’s status is also still in question while he continues to deal with a family emergency. With their top of the order gutted, Nola is in a position to make quick work of the Dodgers regressing offense as he takes the mound with a ERA of 3.43, a WHIP of 1.093, and a FIP of 3.86.

Shortly before our first NRFI gets underway, we focus on the matchup between the Boston Red Sox and Kansas City Royals with both clubs looking to strengthen their position for one of the three highly coveted wildcard spots. While the Royals are in firm contention of grabbing one, the Red Sox are currently three games back from a playoff berth.
Should the Red Sox want to move up the wildcard standings, then James Paxton will need to take advantage of the Royals inability to get on base at a competitive rate as they rank well below league average in On Base Percentage. Their lack of offensive production in terms of getting into scoring position bodes well for Paxton as he enters Monday’s contest with an ERA of 4.52 and a WHIP of 1.463.
As for the Royals defense, they roll out Brady Singer who has done a phenomenal job at minimizing the number of opposing scoring opportunities as he takes the mound with an ERA of 2.88, a WHIP of 1.160, a FIP of 3.74, and 40 Earned Runs Allowed. Every bit of his production will be needed against the Red Sox as their offense ranks above league average in Team Total Hits, RBIs, Total Runs Scored, and On Base Percentage.
