With the Houston Astros taking full control of the AL West, it’s vital for the Seattle Mariners to stay within winning pace by putting away the Chicago White Sox and neutralizing their anemic offense in the process. Before that takes place, we focus on the matchup between the Cleveland Guardians and Philadelphia Phillies as both offenses are in a position to struggle against two productive pitchers.

Once having a commanding lead at the top of the AL West standings, the Mariners have slipped to second after a sluggish stretch of play while the Houston Astros continue to round back into dominant form. Their offensive production has been practically non-existent over the full course of the season, entering Friday’s matchup ranked near dead last in Team Total Hits, RBIs, Total Runs Scored, and On Base Percentage.
While a matchup against the worst team in the league normally presents an opportunity to bounce back and build some momentum, the White Sox Drew Thorpe will do them no favors in their efforts to do so. Thorpe has been dominant in his minimal appearances so far this season, entering the contest with an ERA of 3.03, a WHIP of 1.009, 24 Total Strikeouts, 22 Hits Against, and 13 Earned Runs Against in 7 games played.
Speaking of poor offensive play, the White Sox have been as bad as it gets as they currently rank in the bottom two across the board in the same previously mentioned offensive metrics. This has been a common theme for them all season long and makes for a perfect fade target when they trot out a productive pitcher on the mound as we get to fade their anemic offense in the process.
Expect their offense to continue to generate little to no offense production in this matchup as the Mariners George Kirby has had a brilliant start to his 2024 campaign. Kirby has excelled at minimizing the number of opposing batters getting on base and in scoring position, taking the mound with a ERA of 3.20 and a WHIP of 0.978. Against the worst offense in the league, expect Kirby to make quick work of their top of the order.

While the Mariners have already lost their lead to the Houston Astros, the Cleveland Guardians are potentially next in line to lose their spot at the top of the AL Central standings as they battle through the second hardest remaining strength of schedule. They kick off the back half of their schedule with a matchup against the Philadelphia Phillies who possess the best record in the league and are one of the favorites to win the World Series.
Normally a team to back for our daily YRFI series, the Phillies find themselves in a tough position to generate offensive production as the Guardians Ben Lively has excelled at limiting opposing contact. In 17 games played, Lively takes the mound with an ERA of 3.57, a WHIP of 1.189, just 84 Total Hits Against, and 37 Earned Runs Allowed. Every ounce of his production will be needed against a Phillies offense that ranks fourth in Team Total Hits.
As for the Phillies defense, they roll out Cristopher Sanchez who gets the benefit of throwing against a Guardians offense who has struggled with making contact by ranking below league average in Team Total Hits. Sanchez has excelled at minimizing opposing scoring opportunities on his own accord as his FIP of 2.64 and ERA of 2.97 indicates. Factor in a back end that ranks above league average in Defensive Efficiency and Sanchez finds himself in another opportunity to succeed against a regressing offense.
