We start the day backing the Tigers Reese Olson as he has managed to carve out a role as a reliable starting pitcher and now gets the chance to continue to shine against the lowly Washington Nationals. We then turn our sights towards the matchup between the Guardians and Reds as early scoring opportunities should be minimized. While the Tigers current AL Cy Young award favorite Tarik Skubal gets most of the shine as their dominant ace, Reese Olson has been impressive in his own right as he continues to carve out a role as a reliable starting pitcher. With Olson joining the likes of Skubal, Casey Mize, and Jack Flaherty, the Tigers have a stout starting group that has helped propel them to above league average marks in Team Total Pitching ERA.
The issue for the Tigers is that their pitching alone can not elevate them to division contender status as their offense has continued to severely underwhelm at this point of the season. The Tigers currently rank below league average in Team Total Hits, RBIs, Total Runs Scored, and On Base Percentage. An unfortunate start to the year as their young core was projected to take the next step with their production and play as one of the better units in the league.
Their combination of elite pitching and poor offensive production bodes well for the NRFI, especially as Reese Olson faces off against the lowly Washington Nationals offense. The Nationals have been equally as bad as the Tigers, ranking below league average across the board in the same previously mentioned key metrics. Their struggles will help mask Olson’s WHIP of 1.203 and neutralize their own scoring opportunities as they fail to get into scoring position.
As for the Nationals, they trot out Jake Irvin who has been a popular pitcher to back for our daily NRFI series. Like the Tigers, the Nationals under Irvin also fit the mold for a NRFI as he has been a productive arm that can shut down opposing top of the orders while their own offense struggles to generate production. Irvin takes the mound with an ERA of 3.12, a WHIP of 1.027, 63 Hits Allowed, and 26 Earned Runs Against.

Shortly after the conclusion of our first NRFI, we turn our sights towards the next one when the Cleveland Guardians battle it out against the Cincinnati Reds. Both teams have trended in different directions to start the year as the Reds are in the middle of the pack in the NL Central while the Guardians have taken a firm command of first place in the AL Central standings.
A big reason for the Reds sluggish start to the year have stemmed from their offense, a unit that currently ranks below league average in Team Total Hits, RBIs, and On Base Percentage. Their inability to make contact will prove to be detrimental against the Guardians Tanner Bibee who excels at punching out. Bibee takes the mound with an ERA of 3.73, a WHIP of 1.186, 76 Total Strikeouts, 64 Hits Allowed, and 29 Earned Runs Against.
As for the Guardians, their offense has flirted with negative regression as they grade out well in RBIs and Runs Scored, but below league average in Team Total Hits. They are overly reliant on being patient and creating walks, now facing off against the Reds Nick Lodolo who only has 12 Total Batters Walked this season. Expect their offense to struggle as Lodolo also possesses an ERA of 2.92 and WHIP of 0.994.
