You may not know his name, but Bryse Wilson (2-1, 2.65 ERA, 1.12 WHIP) has become an invaluable member of the Brewers rotation. The reliever was thrust into a starting role after the Brew Crew suffered a rash of injuries. He has responded well, posting a 2.24 ERA across four starts this season. He doesn’t go very deep into games, but he has been incredibly effective over the first few innings.
Wilson will start opposite former Cy Young winner Justin Verlander (2-1, 3.38 ERA, 1.19 WHIP). The 41-year-old has been a significant boost for a battered Astros’ starting rotation since returning from injury. He is coming off his best start, throwing seven scoreless innings and allowing just two hits over seven.
As good as both of these lineups are, we are confident in a quiet start to the evening. The vast majority of the Astros have not faced Wilson before, giving the red-hot starter an advantage in at least the first inning. As good as the Brewers’ have been, they own a .158 batting average against Verlander. That is a recipe for a slow start for both of these offenses.

One of the most underrated storylines from the MLB season's first quarter is Jack Flaherty's resurgence (0-3, 3.338 ERA, 1.05 WHIP). The 28-year-old had been the Cardinals' top pitching prospect and started his career strong, but injuries and issues with control shattered his confidence. The righty has found a new home in Detroit and is again showing the stuff that made him such an appealing prospect.
While Flaherty’s control issues aren’t entirely gone, he has delivered six quality starts over eight games this season. That is an accomplishment we haven’t seen from him since the 2021 season, signaling his improved play may continue through the season. While the D-backs have hit Flaherty hard in the past, they will be seeing a far better version tonight, and it will take time for them to adjust.
Arizona will have their ace on the mound in Zac Gallen (5-2, 2.86 ERA). While he stumbled a bit towards the end of April, he has allowed just two runs on five hits across 12 innings in May. The Tigers hit him hard last year, but they caught him on an off day. Considering his impressive play in May, we see a fantastic effort coming tonight.
While the Tigers put up 12 runs against Arizona yesterday, they were shut out by the lowly Marlins in their previous two games. Runs have been an issue for the Tigers, and last night’s impressive effort doesn’t change that. We’ll see if they can get to Gallen again in 2024, but we know it won’t happen in the first inning.
