The Los Angeles Angels have been terrible through most of the 2023 MLB Season. Now they are without their star pitcher and star batter in Shohei Ohtani for the rest of the season.
He was placed on IL due to an oblique injury before the Angels' September 16th 5-4 loss at home to the Detroit Tigers. Since then, the Angels have been a disaster at the plate.
In the four games with Ohtani, the Angels have averaged 4.2 runs, 6.8 hits, 4.2 RBIs, 2.5 walks, a batting average of .196, and encountered an average of 14.2 strikeouts per game. The Angels have been struck out 18 times in the 5-4 loss to Detroit and 19 times in the 8-3 win at the Tampa Bay Rays on Wednesday.
Elfin (3.44 ERA in 167.2 innings pitched) is the ace pitcher for the Rays and has delivered a team-high 172 strikeouts. Look for him to have one of his best pitching performances of the season in this game against the Angels.
The Atlanta Braves (97-55) have already punched their ticket into the postseason and secured the NL East Divisional title. They are still looking to accomplish more regular season goals with the next one being a 100-win season.
The Washington Nationals (68-85) have been eliminated from postseason play. Their goal is to defeat the Braves in four of their next seven meetings to conclude the regular season. The Braves and the Nationals will start their four-game series in Atlanta starting on Thursday.
The pitching for the Braves has been elite this season. They have been able to rely on four of their top starters as well as a series of young pitchers who need experience. Max Fried (2.64 ERA in 71.2 innings pitched) is set to be the starting pitcher for the Braves on Thursday. While he is a strikeout leader like the other starting pitchers, he has delivered 73 strikeouts this season.
The Nationals are top top-ranked batting team in the NL when it comes to the fewest strikeouts in the league (1082). They are not a team that strikes out often, but they aren't an active team at the plate as the Braves are.
The Philadelphia Phillies (83-69) are on the verge of securing an NL Wildcard spot after a big mid-season comeback. The New York Mets (71-81) are heading in the opposite direction of their franchise as they are on the brink of elimination from the postseason. On Thursday, the Mets and the Phillies will meet in a four-game in Philadelphia.
The Phillies are one of the top batting teams in the NL as they possess a roster full of reliable batters. Philadelphia ranks fourth in the NL in runs accounted (746), third in hits accounted for (1339), third in home runs accounted for (206), eighth in walks (511), third in batting average (.257), fourth in on-base percentage (.328) and third in slugging percentage (.439).
One of the best bets coming into this game is the number of hits from Phillies catcher J.T. Realmuto. In 128 games, Realmuto has accounted for 115 hits, sixth on the team.
The Mets will have David Peterson (5.22 ERA in 100 innings pitched) starting on Thursday. He has allowed 115 hits this season.
The Los Angeles Dodgers (93-58) are easily one of the best batting teams in the league. They have high-caliber and reliable batters from top to bottom of their batting order.
The Dodgers are ranked second in the NL in runs accounted for (851), fourth in hits accounted for (1320), first in double-base hits accounted for (285), second in home runs accounted for (237), first in walks (616), third in batting average (.257), third in on-base percentage (.341) and second in slugging percentage (.458).
Of the many talented batters for the Dodgers, the one who is currently in a slight slump is left-fielder David Peralta. In the last seven games, Peralta has accounted for one hit while striking five times in 20 at-bat appearances.
The Dodgers are on the road against their NL West Divisional rival in the San Francisco Giants (76-76), who are hoping for one last desperate push for an NL Wildcard spot.
Kyle Harrison (5.18 ERA in 24.1 innings pitched) is set to start at pitcher for the Giants on Thursday.
