The Pirates have gotten off to a surprising start this season, and Bryan Reynolds is a big reason why. After nine games, he’s batting .405 with an OPS of 1.334 with five home runs and 14 RBIs. He’s driven in nearly half of Pittsburgh’s run thus far, making him a favorable bet to get an RBI on Monday.
Granted, Reynolds faces a tough matchup with Houston’s Framber Valdez. The lefty will force Reynolds to bat right-handed early in the game. But no pitcher has had their way with Reynolds this season, so Valdez may not have the right answer either. Keep in mind the Pirates have scored at least four runs in five of their last six games, so Pittsburgh should be able to push some runs across. The odds are good that Reynolds will be in the middle of things and continue to drive in runs after collecting at least one RBI seven times in nine games.
The Yankees have to be happy with the production they’re getting from Gleyber Torres this season. He looks like the old Torres with 10 hits in his first 28 at-bats (.357). Torres has also drawn nine walks and struck out just three times, which shows that he’s locked in and seeing the ball well. Despite going hitless on Sunday, that was just the second time Torres has gone without a hit this year, making him a good candidate to get back on track during Monday’s game against the Guardians.
At first glance, Torres has a tough matchup on Monday against Shane Bieber. But Torres is one of the few hitters in baseball with good numbers in his career against the former Cy Young winner. Torres is 5 for 9 in his career against Bieber. While that’s a small sample size, it’s enough to take advantage of the favorable odds of Torres picking up a hit on Monday.
It’s rare to bet against Aaron Judge getting a hit. But there is value in going against the reigning home run king on Monday. Judge and the Yankees will be facing Cleveland’s Shane Bieber. He’s just 1 for 11 with six strikeouts in his career against Bieber. Obviously, he doesn’t see the ball well out of Bieber’s hand and may have to wait until later in the game to do his damage.
Of course, Judge is fresh off a three-hit game, including two home runs, on Sunday. But that’s the only multi-hit game Judge has had over the last seven games. Given his history against Bieber, Judge is likely to cool down quickly and fail to make much of an impact during Monday’s game.
The last time Yu Darvish and the Padres visited Citi Field last October, he dominated over seven innings, allowing just one run on six hits. He had a great postseason last year and followed it up with five strong innings against the Diamondbacks in his first start of 2023, allowing one run on three hits. Darvish appears unbothered by pitching in the World Baseball Classic or the pitch clock, setting him up for another strong performance on Monday.
Obviously, the Mets pose a more serious challenge to Darvish than the Arizona lineup did last week. But the New York offense has been up and down this season and vulnerable against quality pitchers. The Mets were shutout twice last week and went cold again on Sunday. Also, Starling Marte, who left Sunday’s game with an injury, is the only player on the Mets with impressive numbers in his career against Darvish, who is poised to shut down the Mets again on Monday.
As impressive as Sandy Alcantara was in his last start, he’s not excelled when it comes to strikeouts this season. He had just two over 5.2 innings in his first start of the season and only five when he pitched a complete game in his last start. In other words, he has just seven strikeouts in 14.2 innings this year, so the odds are against him getting to seven strikeouts in Monday’s start.
At the same time, Alcantara doesn’t have the best track record against the Phillies. Even though J.T. Realmuto and Kyle Schwarber have been vulnerable to the strikeout against Alcantara, several Philadelphia hitters have more than held their own against Miami’s ace. In a hitter-friendly park like Citizens Bank Park, Alcantara probably won’t be dominant enough to get to seven strikeouts.
