The New York Yankees hit a franchise record, nine home runs, on Saturday against the Brewers. The YES broadcast had a segment about New York’s new bats during the game.
In the offseason, the analytics department made bats with larger barrels, which worked for New York as they bombed their former teammate Nestor Cortes. The Yankees hit home runs on the first three pitches of the game, with Aaron Judge leading the way.
Judge is the team leader, batting .500 with three home runs and nine RBIs. He has a 2.100 OPS in two games, which will undoubtedly drop, but he has been one of the hottest hitters in baseball on the opening weekend.
The Brewers haven’t shown any consistency at the plate. They scored nine runs on Saturday, but New York won the game in the first inning and took their foot off the gas.
Many people doubted the Yankees' ability to stay on top of the American League, but they couldn’t have started off better.
The Tampa Bay Rays opened up play at the Yankees' spring training complex, and they have posted one win and one loss. The Rockies have been pesky in the series, and only a combined eight runs were scored in two games.
We expect another low-scoring affair on Sunday, and the Rays should control the game. Taj Bradley will throw for Tampa Bay, and he is the reason to take Tampa Bay in this spot.
Bradley had a 4.11 ERA with a 1.22 WHIP in 2024. He made massive strides between his rookie season in 2023 and his sophomore year in 2024, so we anticipate a big step once again.
The Rays don’t have a great offense currently, but they have a legitimate pitching staff, which should push them to a Sunday win.
The Mariners aren’t off to a hot start to the season against the Athletics. The A’s have won two of three games on the road and outscored the Mariners 11-2 in the past two games.
If the game plays out as expected, the series finale should return to the Mariners. Bryan Woo will throw for Seattle, and he was 9-3 with a 2.89 ERA and a 0.90 WHIP in 2024.
Woo has a significant edge over JP Sears for the Athletics. Sears went 11-13 with a 4.38 ERA and a 1.22 WHIP last season, which isn’t bad, but he doesn’t have the upside of Woo.
Look for Seattle to even the series on Sunday.
