Don’t look now, but the Cubs are one of the hottest teams in baseball. They have gone 13-5 since August 16, putting them just 4.5 games out of an NL Wild Card spot.
The Yankees have not enjoyed the same success, losing six of their previous eight games. That run saw them post bad series losses against the Nats, Cardinals, and Rangers. The Cubs are playing far better than all three of those teams, and it will lead to another Yankee loss tonight.
This afternoon, New York will have Luis Gil (12-6, 3.39 ERA, 1.20 WHIP) on the mound. The 26-year-old broke out for the Yankees this season but has been a bit erratic in the second half. His last two starts have been especially ugly, allowing seven runs on ten hits and eight walks over seven innings.
Gil’s recent struggles can be attributed to a lower back injury that landed him on the IL. However, back injuries never go away, and this will be the Yankee pitcher’s first start since returning to the team. Expect to see him struggle against a red-hot Cubs lineup, leading to another ugly outing.
The Cubs will have Jordan Wicks (2-2, 3.82 ERA, 1.36 WHIP) on the mound opposite Gil. The young pitcher has been up and down between the big leagues and AAA but has delivered some crucial spot starts. He looked great in his first start back with the team on Sunday, allowing one run on four hits and no walks over five innings.
Wicks won’t go deep into this game, meaning the Cubs bullpen will play a key role. While they were atrocious in the first half of the season, the team now ranks in the top ten in ERA. That will help keep a dangerous New York lineup in check en route to a win.

The Brew Crew is coming off a tough series loss to the Cards, but they are set up to bounce back tonight.
Milwaukee will have Frankie Montas (6-9, 4.70 ERA, 1.39 WHIP) on the mound tonight. The veteran has been better since being acquired from the Brewers, going 2-1 with a 3.82 ERA across six starts. While he has allowed four runs in two straight starts, that damage came during a couple of bad innings. Outside that, Montas looked like the ace many thought he was supposed to be.
The Rockies have enjoyed some offensive success at home this season, but things have been ugly on the road. They are batting a lowly .219 on the road, posting an OPS of .639. By comparison, they have a .263 average and an OPS of .771.
Colorado will have Ryan Feltner (1-10, 5.11 ERA, 1.43 WHIP) starting tonight. The 28-year-old is having a rough season, minus a brief hot streak in July. Feltner posted an impressive 2.51 ERA over five starts that month, but the Rockies still lost each game.
Feltner will have his hands full against a Brewers lineup that has scored the fifth-most runs in the league. While the loss of Christian Yelich has been felt, Willy Adames and Jackson Chourio have stepped up to fill the void. Expect them to lead the Brewers to an impressive showing against Fletner tonight.
