We had a lot of success betting on Hunter Brown (11-7, 3.55 ERA, 1.29 WHIP) in August, and we will stick with him in September. The righty finished the month with a 2-0 record and a 1.45 ERA. Those numbers were far from a fluke, including matchups against great offenses in the Orioles, Royals, and Red Sox.
A red-hot Brown will be a big problem for a Reds team that hasn’t seen him before. The 26-year-old has some nasty stuff, and it takes time for most teams to figure him out. Things won’t get any easier for the Reds when Brown exits the game, considering that the Astros have the fourth-best bullpen ERA in the league.
While the Reds have some dangerous bats in their lineup, they have struggled at the plate this season. Cincinnati tanks twenty-fifth in batting average and nineteenth in OBP.
The Reds will have one of their top pitching prospects on the mound in Rhett Lowder (0-1, 2.25 ERA, 1.50 WHIP). The 22-year-old was sharp in his debut against Milwaukee last week, allowing one run on two hits and four walks over four innings. However, the team still lost 14-0.
Expect Lowder to be on a pitch count once again tonight. That may not matter, considering he is facing one of the best lineups in baseball in his second career big league start.

This is a matchup of teams that are struggling to get wins. Both have lost a lot of games over the last couple of weeks and will be desperate for a win tonight. However, only Minnesota will achieve that tonight.
The Twins will have Pablo Lopez (13-8, 4.05 ERA, 1.12 WHIP) starting tonight. The 28-year-old has been a disappointment this season but put together an incredible August. He went 3-1 with a 1.71 ERA over five starts. That is closer to the version of Lopez that we have seen in the past, suggesting that his months-long slump may finally be over.
Lopez will be facing a familiar foe in the Rays tonight. Tampa has a combined 52 at-bats against the Twins starter and posted a batting average and OBP of .189. Those numbers rose earlier this year when Tampa beat up Lopez in June, but the pitcher has improved since then.
Tampa’s offense has been an issue this season and has worsened since the All-Star break. They owned a team average of .236 in the first half of the season but are batting .219 since the All-Star break.
The Rays will have Taj Bradley (6-9, 4.35 ERA, 1.22 WHIP) starting opposite Lopez. The team’s former top pitching prospect was very good for most of the season, but things came apart significantly in August. He finished the month going 0-4 with a 10.41 ERA across five starts.
Things won’t be any easier tonight against a Twins team that ranks eleventh in both batting average and runs scored.
