Best MLB Bets Today: Astros vs. Reds (6:40 PM EST)

Astros -1.5 (-134) at FanDuel Sportsbook

The Astros have been sticking with rookie Spencer Arrighetti (7-11, 4.63 ERA, 1.38 WHIP) despite his struggles, and it is finally starting to pay off. The 24-year-old posted a 1.95 ERA across five outings in August, registering five quality starts. He is currently riding a 13 2/3 inning-scoreless streak.

What has made Arrighetti so successful is his control. He struggled with it for most of the season but has figured things out over the last month. His nasty arsenal of pitches leads to high strikeout totals, which is bad news for a Reds team that has struck out the eighth most times this season.

The Reds will have Nick Martinez (6-6, 3.78 ERA, 1.13 WHIP) starting opposite Arrighetti. The reliever has started many games for the Reds this season and has been impressive, but things came apart in August. He finished the month with a 4.26 ERA, and the Reds lost four of his previous five starts.

While Martinez will be starting at home, that hasn’t worked in his favor this season. He is 3-4 with a 4.62 ERA in Cincinnati this season. That will be a problem against an Astros team that ranks third in the league in batting average.

Best MLB Bets Today: Nationals vs. Marlins (6:40 PM EST)

Nationals ML (-138) at FanDuel Sportsbook

Neither of these teams will be making the postseason, but the Nationals are the better team. They have a lot of talented young players getting playing time this season, including tonight’s starter, MacKenzie Gore (8-11, 4.45 ERA, 1.55 WHIP).

Gore was one of the top pitching prospects in the league when he was traded to the Nats. While he hasn’t figured things out just yet, he has been incredibly sharp over his last two outings. Those starts came against the Yankees and Braves, with Gore allowing three runs over 12 innings.

We expect Gore to stay hot tonight as he faces a Miami team that ranks twenty-ninth in runs scored. While the team has been better at the plate since the All-Star break, that hasn’t led to more scoring runs. Given that the Marlins will have a struggling pitcher starting tonight, we don’t see the lineup being able to do enough to prevent a loss tonight.

Miami will have Valente Bellozo (2-2, 4.32 ERA, 1.34 WHIP) on the mound tonight. The rookie has been solid since returning to the roster in August, but things have been ugly over his last three outings. He allowed 13 runs on 21 hits and nine walks over 14 innings in those starts.

The Nationals rank in most offensive categories around the middle of the pack, but they have been better since the All-Star break. After batting .239 going into the break, that has improved to .258 since then.
