The White Sox became the first team to be officially eliminated from playoff contention this season, as they now sit 43 games back in the AL Central. They are playing like a team going through the motions at this point, with their last six losses all coming by more than one run. This has led them to go 49-70 against the run line as an underdog this season.
One of the lone bright spots for the White Sox in 2024 will be on the mound today: Garrett Crochet (6-9, 3.61 ERA, 1.07 WHIP). The 25-year-old broke out this season to become one of the best young pitchers in baseball, but the White Sox are careful with his workload. They have not let him last past the fourth inning since June 30, choosing to conserve his arm during this lost season.
Crochet’s short leash is why we love this run line. Chicago’s bullpen owns the second-worst ERA in the league, which is good news for a mediocre Giants lineup. Aside from an ugly series with the Braves, the team has been hitting the ball well, so we expect them to do some damage against the White Sox bullpen this afternoon.
As impressive as Crochet has been, the Giants will have the advantage today with Logan Webb (11-8, 3.17 ERA, 1.22 WHIP) starting. The ace has been fantastic this season and owns an ERA of 0.62 across his last four starts.
With Webb pitching this well, we expect him to deliver a near-perfect outing tonight. The White Sox rank twenty-ninth in batting average and dead last in runs scored by a wide margin. Given how they have been playing of late, we don’t expect them to put up much of a fight today.

The Phillies have struggled since the All-Star Break but turned things around against the Nats last week. While things have been improving for the Braves, we think tonight’s starting pitcher will ultimately cost them this division battle.
The Braves will send Max Fried (7-7, 3.62 ERA, 1.25 WHIP) to the bump tonight. The veteran was great in the first half of the season, but he has been awful since then. He owns an ERA of 8.44 since July 1, posting just one quality start.
Fried’s struggles started with a game against the Phillies. He was shelled for five runs on 11 hits over six innings on July 5. He also faced them in his first start of the season, allowing three runs while only recording two outs in the first inning.
The Phillies will also have a veteran on the mound in Aaron Nola (11-6, 3.45 ERA, 1.16 WHIP). The 31-year-old is having another solid season and will face the Braves for the second time in the last two months. He delivered a quality start on the road in Atlanta when he squared off against Fried, which led to an 8-6 win for Philly.
