We aren’t really buying into the Royals’ recent hot streak, but we love their chances to grab a lopsided win tonight. One reason why is the Tigers’ recent play at the plate. The team has been shut out in two of their last three games and scored more than three runs just once over their last seven.
Detroit’s offensive struggles will be on full display tonight with Seth Lugo (12-5, 2.66 ERA, 1.04 WHIP) on the mound for Kansas City. The veteran is coming off a rough outing at home against the Cubs, but he’ll be on the road tonight. Lugo has been better on the road than at home this season, going 7-2 with a 2.51 ERA.
Lugo will face the Tigers for the second time this season. He was incredible in that appearance, shutting them out over seven innings to earn an 8-0 win. Considering how poorly they have been hitting the ball of late, we expect the righty to deliver another stellar outing tonight.
The Tigers will have young Keider Montero (1-4, 6.38 ERA, 1.45 WHIP) on the mound starting against the Royals. The 24-year-old is having a rough rookie campaign, with things getting especially bad in July. He has allowed 16 runs (15 earned) over 15 ⅓ innings in his last three starts.
Montero will have his hands full today as he faces a Royals lineup that is seeing the ball well. Since returning from the All-Star break, they have averaged 5.8 runs, scoring 22 in their three-game series to kick off the week. With Bobby Witt Jr. continuing to put up historic numbers over the last month, we expect another big run total from them tonight.

The Marlins were major sellers at the deadline, but you wouldn’t guess that from their recent play. Miami came out of the All-Star break to split a series with the Mets before taking two out of three from the Orioles and Brewers. That run shows that this team is not ready to pack things in quite yet, making them a very dangerous opponent for a team like the Braves.
The Marlins will have Max Meyer (2-0, 3.00 ERA, 0.95 WHIP) on the mound tonight. The franchise’s fourth-ranked prospect has been solid over four starts this season. That includes a start against Atlanta in April, where he limited them to one run on six hits.
Meyer rejoined the team last week and had a tough outing against the Brewers, allowing three runs over four innings. While that is some cause for concern, we expect him to settle in against an opponent he has already beaten once this season.
Even if Meyer struggles, he will have some room for error with Charlie Morton (5-6, 4.16 ERA, 1.25 WHIP). The 40-year-old is having a brutal July, posting a 5.31 ERA over four starts. His last outing was his worst, allowing the Mets to score seven runs (five earned) on six hits and three home runs over 2 ⅔ innings.
Morton faced this Marlins team in April, but it wasn’t pretty, allowing six runs over 5 ⅔ innings. Considering how poorly he has been pitching over the last month, we expect a similar result to play out tonight.
