Astros’ starter Hunter Brown (5-5, 4.37 ERA, 1.37 WHIP) has turned his season over his last seven starts. He had a 1.91 ERA during that span, far down from the 7.71 ERA he had on May 17. His improved play is a big part of how the Astros have turned things around over the last month, and there is no sign of him slowing down. Brown has allowed one run over his previous four starts (25.0 innings), winning all four.
We love Brown’s chances to stay hot tonight against a Blue Jays lineup that has been a massive disappointment in 2024. They rank nineteenth in batting average (.237) and twenty-second in runs scored (334), leading them to the cellar of the AL East.
Toronto will have rookie Yariel Rodriguez (0-2, 5.94 ERA, 1.92 WHIP). The righty has had a rocky start to his MLB career, and his worst starting came in his last start. Rodriguez allowed five runs (four earned) over just 1 1/3 innings, leading to a lopsided loss to the Guardians.
We expect Rodriguez to deliver another brutal start tonight against a great Astros lineup. While Houston’s pitching has been an issue, they lead the league in batting average. They will be the most impressive unit that Rodriguez has faced in his young career and have scored five or more runs in eight of their last nine games. That is a recipe for an easy cover of the run line, so we are locking this one in.
Bet on Astros -1.5 (+115) at FanDuel
We are expecting to see some major fireworks in Coors Field tonight. One big reason why is Rockies starter Austin Gomber (1-5, 4.63 ERA, 1.31 WHIP). The 30-year-old was awful in June, going 0-3 with a 9.39 ERA. The lefty has allowed at least four runs in four straight games, and we like that trend to continue tonight.
Gomber has faced some great lineups in June, and they will be facing another to kick off July. Milwaukee ranks sixth in the league in batting average, eighth in runs scored, and second in stolen bases. The team also leads all of baseball in grand slams after hitting five during their homestand last week. Cold streaks from William Contreras and Willy Adames haven’t slowed this Brewers’ lineup down, and they will benefit from an easy pitching matchup in the most hitter-friendly park in the league tonight.
The Brewers will have Bryse Wilson (5-3, 3.89 ERA, 1.23 WHIP) on the mound tonight. The 26-year-old has been solid for the Brewers but doesn’t last deep into games, going 6+ innings once since May 7. His best work came when the team paired with reliever Jared Koenig, but the big Brewers reliever is now out with an injury. That means if Wilson struggles tonight, the Brewers will be without their top option to replace the young pitcher.
While the Rockies offense isn’t nothing special, playing at Coors Field makes them dangerous. It's a hard place for pitchers to work, and Wilson will be making his first start there tonight. Expect some bumps, helping to cover this total early on in tonight’s game.
