Our bets for today focus on two matchups involving some impressive bats. The first is from a cross-country matchup between the San Diego Padres and the AL East-leading Philadelphia Phillies. The other is a battle between AL leaders as the Seattle Mariners visit the Cleveland Guardians.

This matchup features two of the best offenses in baseball, but pitching will decide tonight’s game. The Padres will have Michael King (5-4, 3.58 ERA) starting tonight, looking to continue his breakout campaign. The former reliever has found a home in San Diego and has been fantastic since May 1. He has been great over his last four starts but faced bad teams in the A’s, Diamondbacks, and Marlins.
While King has an impressive start against the Dodgers on his resume, he was not able to find that kind of success against the Phillies earlier this season. The righty was lit up for six runs over 5 1/3 innings, allowing a whopping three home runs. While King has been much better since then, the Phillies lineup remains one of the best in baseball. Given that the game will be in front of a rowdy Philly crowd, we expect another ugly outing from King tonight.
The Phillies will have veteran Aaron Nola (8-3, 3.48 ERA) starting opposite of King. The 31-year-old’s ERA skyrocketed when he allowed eight runs across 3 2/3 innings to the Red Sox last week. As bad as it was, we aren’t concerned about that affecting his start tonight. That is because Nola’s ERA was an impressive 2.77 heading into the game, and he has only one other poor outing on his resume this season.
The Padres lineup leads the league in batting average, but they struggled against Nola earlier this season. They managed three runs over eight innings against him, leading to a 9-3 home loss.
Bet on Phillies -1.5 (+136) at FanDuel
The Mariners have been atop a bad AL West, but now they look like contenders in the AL. The team has gone 16-5 since May 26, taking full advantage of a soft part of their schedule. While the Guardians are one of the top teams in the league, they have lost five of their last nine games. Cleveland is a great team, but they will fall to a red hor Mariners team tonight.
Seattle will send Bryce Miller (5-5, 3.48 ERA) to the mound tonight. The 25-year-old had a tough May, but his numbers aren’t as bad as they seem. His 0.98 WHIP is fantastic and shows that he is limiting traffic on the basepaths. Miller is coming off one of his most impressive starts of the season, holding the White Sox scoreless on two hits over seven innings. While the Guardians are far more dangerous, we think Miller will be able to keep them quiet on the road tonight.
Cleveland will have young Triston McKenzie (3-3, 4.10 ERA) making the start. Injuries have hammered the former top prospect, and he has struggled to regain the success from earlier in his career. While his ERA isn’t too terrible, his 1.41 WHIP is. Control has been an issue for McKenzie since his 2022 breakout campaign, which is good news for a mediocre Mariners lineup.
While Seattle isn’t an impressive offensive team, Julio Rodriguez (.268 BA, 7 HR, 29 RBI, 16 SB) has steadily improved as the season progresses. His power is finally returning, with two home runs over his previous four games. The budding superstar has several multi-hit appearances this month, and we love his chances to add another against McKenzie tonight.
