While the price isn’t great, this is one of our favorite bets of the day. While Miami has been playing surprisingly well over the last two weeks, they will have an uphill battle today against the Padres. Not only will they be outgunned on the mound, but they also will be up against a San Diego offense that ranks fourth in batting average (.255) and eighth in runs scored (250). The Marlins have been far worse in both categories, ranking twenty-second in batting average (.232) and twenty-eighth in runs scored (202).
The Marlins will have Braxton Garrett (1-0, 5.30 ERA) making his fourth start of the season today. He was shelled in his first two starts but bounced back to throw a complete game shutout against the Diamondbacks last week. As impressive as that was, he’ll face a far more dangerous foe tonight in the Padres. Even if he can register a quality start, we still think the Padres will cover the run line this afternoon.
San Diego will have their ace on the mound in Yu Darvish (4-2, 3.04 ERA,0.99 WHIP). He was hit hard by a great Yankees offense in his last start, but hadn’t allowed a single run in four straight starts heading into it. That run included starts against the Braves, Dodgers, Cubs, and Reds, making it even more impressive. Given all those teams are lightyears ahead of the Marlins, we expect another scoreless outing from Darvish today.
Bet on Padres -1.5 (+118) at FanDuel
We aren’t here to tell you that the Astros are making a comeback this season, but they will get the win tonight. One big reason for that is the Houston offense. They lead the league in batting average (.263) and have an MVP candidate in Kyle Tucker (.276 BA, 18 HR, 39 RBI, 9 SB). The Astros have a ton of depth behind the star, making them one of the most dangerous lineups in baseball.
Another reason we love the Astros tonight is Justin Verlander (3-2, 3.60 ERA). The former Cy Young winner isn’t what he used to be, but he is still putting up some impressive numbers. His ERA and WHIP (1.23) are inflated from a pair of ugly starts, but those came against great offenses in the Brewers and Yankees. That won’t be the case tonight as he faces a Mariners team that is twenty-seventh in batting average (.224) and runs scored (205).
The final reason we are locking in this bet is that Seattle will have George Kirby (4-5, 4.33 WHIP) making the start. The 26-year-old was very good in his first two seasons but has struggled in 2024. Things have been terrible of late as Kirby has allowed ten runs over his last 12 innings pitched and lost three of his previous four starts. The righty did stifle Houston at the beginning of the month, but he has regressed since then. Given how well Houston is swinging the bat, we don’t see him repeating the strong effort tonight.
