Milwaukee ended a mini-skid over the weekend in Boston, and we like their chances to keep rolling today. One big reason is their lineup, which has been one of the best in baseball. The team currently ranks fourth in batting average (.256), fifth in RBIs (245), and third in stolen bases (69). While they are getting production from almost every spot in the order, having Bryce Turang (.301 BA, 19 SB) at the top has given them the leadoff man they have been missing. Given that they are facing a struggling pitcher on the mound, we love their chances to stay hot.
The Cubs will have Justin Steele (0-2, 5.68 ERA) starting in Milwaukee today. The ace has been struggling badly since returning from injury at the beginning of May. Over his last three starts, the lefty has allowed 15 earned runs across 16 innings (8.44 ERA). While Steele has enjoyed a lot of success against Milwaukee, he is not the same pitcher, and this is a vastly improved Brewers team. Expect another ugly start today.
Milwaukee will send rookie Robert Gasser (2-0, 2.65 ERA, 1.12 WHIP) out to the mound against the Cubs. While he is coming off his worst start of the season, the damage all came in the sixth inning, with Gasse cruising until then. Much of the offense Miami generated involved fielding errors and some lucky hits that fell in just the right place. While Chicago’s offense will be far more of a challenge, they are averaging just 2.6 runs per game since May 13.

While the Reds are coming off a series win against the Dodgers, the Cardinals have been the hotter team of late. After a brutal first couple of months of the season, St. Louis is close to pushing its record above the .500 mark. Its success has come from an offensive surge, which has helped overcome some issues with its pitching. Considering they’ll have one of their better starters on the mound tonight, we expect them to add another win this afternoon.
Veteran Lance Lynn (2-2, 3.68 ERA) will make the start for St. Louis today. The veteran hasn’t been great in May, but he is coming off his best start of the season. Lynn threw six scoreless innings against the Orioles, holding them to two hits and no walks to go with one unearned run. The 37-year-old probably doesn’t have too many scoreless outings left in his career, but he is still good enough to put a hot St. Louis offense in a position to win.
The Reds have Nick Lodolo (3-2, 3.34 ERA) slated to start today. It will be his first start back after a stint on the IL. The young starter has had issues staying healthy, and he was playing his worst baseball before going down this season. Over his last two starts, he has allowed eight earned runs over 11 innings (6.55 ERA). Lodolo has also struggled at home, going 1-1 with a 4.41 ERA over three home starts this season. Given how well the Cards lineup is playing, we see another rough start for him tonight.
