Our bets for today come from games where Midwest teams will take on AL West opponents. The first is a game between the St. Louis Cardinals and Los Angeles Angels, which are struggling. The other is a battle between playoff contenders, the Kansas City Royals and Seattle Mariners.

Best MLB Bets Today: Cardinals vs. Angels (9:38 PM EST)

Angels ML (+114 at DraftKings Sportsbook)

This matchup features two teams recently dropping three of four games to division rivals. Neither seems destined for the playoffs, but we think the Cardinals have an edge in tonight’s game.

One big reason for that is Cardinals’ starter Sonny Gray (4-2, 2.29 ERA, 0.96 WHIP). While the veteran righty was lit up by the Brewers in his last start, he is having one of the best seasons of his career. Gray has held opponents scoreless in three of his six starts and has allowed more than two runs just once. He caught the Brewers at a bad time last week, but he’ll bounce back against a far-worse Angels lineup tonight.

The Angels will have Reid Detmers (3-4, 4.96 ERA) starting opposite of Gray tonight. LA had hoped the 24-year-old would take a step forward in 2024, but instead, he has taken a massive step backward. After allowing just three runs over his first four starts, he’s allowed 22 over his previous four. 

The Cardinals lineup has been a massive disappointment, but we have started to see some life out of Paul Goldschmidt (.197 BA, 3 HR, 13 RBI). He started May with a seven-game hitless streak but has shown some life over the last few games. While it's hardly a surprise for the former MVP’s numbers to dip at 36 years old, they have not dipped as much as they have so far. We see his turnaround continuing today against a struggling Detmers.

Best MLB Bets Today: Royals vs. Mariners (9:40 PM EST)

Mariners ML (-155 at DraftKings Sportsbook)

This matchup features two teams desperately trying to remain at the top of their divisions. The Royals are tied in a three-way battle for the AL Central lead, while the Mariners attempt to hold off the Rangers in the AL West. While both appear set for strong seasons, Seattle has the advantage in tonight’s battle.

The Royals' pitching is strong, but their bats have been responsible for their recent hot streak. Salvador Perez is having the best season of his career, giving them a critical bat behind young stars Bobby Witt Jr. and Maikel Garcia. However, the 34-year-old has been cooling off in May, and his career numbers suggest that regression will continue. While the Royals have enough young talent to win games without him, that won’t be the case with one of the AL's best arms on the mound tonight.

The Mariners will start Logan Gilbert (3-1, 2.94 ERA, 0.94 WHIP) against the Royals. The 27-year-old has been a good starter for Seattle over the last two seasons but has taken a significant step forward in 2024. While he was hammered hard by the Twins in his last start, Gilbert allowed a combined four runs over his previous five starts. We expect him to return to form tonight against the Royals.
