While we are impressed by the Nationals’ surprising start, they will run into a brick wall against the Orioles tonight. Baltimore has come alive since April 14, winning 15 of their next 20 games, and currently leads the AL East. Their offense has been a big reason for their hot streak, with the team now ranking third in runs scored and eighth in batting average.
It feels like the Orioles' entire lineup is seeing the ball well, led by monster starts from catcher Adley Rutschman (.324 BA, 5 HR, 22 RBI) and shortstop Guannr Henderson (.274 BA, 10 HR, 24 RBI, 6 SB). The former is showing that his impressive rookie campaign wasn’t a fluke, while the latter has started garnering a lot of bets to win the AL MVP. Both are well-protected in a deep Baltimore lineup, setting them up for continued success this season.
Baltimore will face Trevor Williams on the mound tonight (3-0, 2.27 ERA). The 32-year-old is having the best season of his career, allowing more than two runs just once across six starts. However, the veteran has lasted at least six innings in just one start. Williams has faced some good offenses in the Rangers and Astros, but both have struggled to find the consistency they had last season. Williams will face a far more difficult test tonight as he takes on an Orioles team crushing the ball.
The Nationals lineup will face far more of a challenge with Corbin Burnes (3-1, 2.61 ERA) on the bump for Baltimore. The former Cy Young winner has been excellent in his first year with the Orioles, posting an impressive 0.92 WHIP across sevens 41 1/3 innings pitched this season. While he lost in his last start, Burnes allowed just two runs on four hits over six innings against the Yankees. He’ll face a far easier challenge against Washington today, and we think he delivers a gem.
Bet on Orioles -1.5 (-132) at FanDuel
This matchup features two surprisingly good offenses early in 2024. The Brewers have overcome the loss of Christian Yelich to score the ninth most runs in the league this season and compete for an NL Central title. They are led by a red-hot William Contreras (.336 BA, 5 HR, 27 RBI) and a slew of young hitters finding their groove. Things have also been great for the Royals, with two great young players leading the way in Bobby Witt Jr. (.319 BA, 4 HR, 19 RBI, 11 SB) and Maikel Garcia (.232 BA, 4 HR, 20 RBI, 8 SB). However, we think tonight’s pitching matchup steals the show.
The Brewers will have Colin Rea (3-0, 2.67 ERA) on the mound tonight. The 33-year-old is having his best season, stepping up to be the Brewers’ second starter amid several injuries. While his past numbers suggest a regression is coming, Rea is coming off his strongest start of the season. On Wednesday, the righty threw six scoreless innings against the Rays, allowing four hits and two walks while striking out five. His ability to go deep into games is an issue, but we see him posting a strong start before handing things over to Milwaukee’s elite bullpen.
The Royals will also have a veteran on the mound in Seth Lugo (5-1, 1.60 ERA). The 34-year-old is also having the best season of his career, though he has been a far better pitcher for much of his career. Lugo has one blemish on his resume this season, which was a rough outing against the Orioles. However, he has registered a quality start in his other six starts. He also has thrown at least seven innings and won in three of his previous four starts, allowing one combined run.
Look for both of these pitchers to stay hot, leading to a low-scoring brawl between these two teams.
