This matchup features two of the top teams in baseball. The Brewers have been the hotter team, winning seven of their previous nine coming into this series. While the Yankees are 5-4 during that same span, they have a significant edge tonight for several reasons.
First, Carlos Rodon (1-1, 2.70 ERA) will be on the mound for the Yankees. The veteran has been plagued by injuries throughout his career. Many thought that had caught up with him after a disastrous 2023 campaign that saw Rodon post a 6.85 ERA across 14 starts. However, the 31-year-old has rebounded in a big way. While he’s been far from perfect, he will be able to do enough against a Milwaukee team missing Christian Yelich.
The Brewers have some talented bats and speed, but Yelich is the lynchpin. The former MVP winner is out with a back injury, and the Brewers run productions have cooled off since. While they were able to beat up the Pirates and their bad bullpen on Thursday, he had scored three or fewer runs in their previous four games.
Milwaukee will turn to Joe Ross (1-2,4.05 ERA) to start against the Yankees. He’s had mixed results but struggled badly against a very good Padres team two starts ago. Even with Aaron Judge struggling, Juan Soto and the rest of the New York lineup are a formidable matchup. Expect Ross to struggle, leading to the Brewers getting into their overworked bullpen.
Betting on the Rays has been a bit of an adventure in 2024, but that won’t be the case tonight. The Rays have one of their easiest matchups of the entire season tonight as they take on a horrendous White Sox team. While Tampa is struggling to find consistency, the White Sox are losing games on a very consistent basis. Coming into this series with just three wins and a seven-game losing streak, we expect Chicago to add another loss tonight.
The Rays have the talent advantage and the edge on the mound tonight. They’ll be starting Aaron Civale (2-2, 3.90 ERA) against Chicago. The 28-year-old is a solid back-end starter who started the season strong but saw his numbers inflated by an ugly start against the Yankees. The righty has been sharp in his other outings, which came against better lineups than he’ll see today.
The White Sox offense has been the worst in the league, ranking last in batting average (.192) and runs scored (56). Both numbers are awful, especially considering their run total is almost 20 fewer than the twenty-ninth team. While some key batters have found success against Civale, the Rays pitcher dominated them last season, holding Chicago scoreless over six innings.
Chicago will have rookie Jonathan Cannon (0-1, 7.27 ERA) starting against the Rays. He had an impressive debut against the Royals but was hammered hard by the Twins on Monday. He lasted just 3 ⅔ innings, allowing six runs on nine hits and one walk. The Rays lineup is far better than the Twins, so we see another ugly start for the 23-year-old.
