The Astros have been terrible in 2024, but they will have a great chance to turn things around tonight. One big reason for that belief is tonight’s terrible pitching matchup. Both starters have struggled mightily this season, but the Astros lineup is far more dangerous than the banged-up Cubs. While the team is off to one of their worst starts in recent memory, they own the third-best batting average in baseball (.266). Their impressive lineup is healthy and playing well, which is bad news for Cubs starter Jordan Wicks (0-2, 5.29 ERA, 1.79 WHIP).
Wicks was solid in seven starts during his rookie season but hasn’t looked nearly as good early this year. He has yet to make it a full five innings over his first four starts, thanks to his inability to keep runners off the basepaths. That is a significant problem when facing a lineup as impressive as the Astros, and it will lead to his third loss of the season.
Houston will have JP France (0-2, 7.08 ERA) making the start tonight. The righty was fantastic in his rookie campaign last season, going 11-6 with a 3.83 ERA. That success hasn’t carried over to this season, but his numbers are inflated by a brutal start against the Ranger. France bounced back from that ugly outing by impressing against the Braves, allowing two runs on four hits across five innings. The Cubs are an excellent team but are without some critical bats due to injury. As a result, we expect France to register his first quality start of the season tonight.
If anyone knows the importance of winning an early series against division rivals, it's the Rangers and Mariners. The two were locked in a wild AL West race with the Astros last season, which was decided by just one game. Neither team has been overwhelmed this season, setting up another tight division race. While the Rangers have the better lineup, we are rolling with the Mariners to get a road win tonight.
We like this bet because of the pitching matchup. The Mariners will have one of their best young pitchers on the mound in Logan Gilbert (1-0, 2.33 ERA). Aside from a tough outing against Milwaukee, Gilbert has been incredible. In his other three starts, he has allowed just three runs on 12 hits across 21 ⅓ innings. We like him to deliver another strong performance as he faced a Rangers team he was great against in 2023, posting a 2.49 ERA across three starts.
The Rangers will turn to Dane Dunning 92-1, 3.91 ERA) to make the start tonight. The 29-year-old has been a nice piece for the Rangers rotation, but he is far from elite. He allows far too many walks, which usually leads to short outings.
The Mariners have finally begun to heat up on offense, led by an impressive run from Julio Rodriguez. With Gilbert on the mound and the Mariners lineup seeing the ball well, we are all over the Seattle moneyline tonight.
